Mitsuba Academy: Demon Hunters 2

108 posts in this topic

I really liked Fuyukaba Academy: Demon Hunters. Apparently, enough of you agreed with this sentiment to make it the last winner of the RP Awards. Unfortunately, it's... well, dead. Unfortunately, since not all the original members are still interested, it’s going to stay that way, so a challenger emerges! Or something like that; I’m not quite sure how you challenge an incumbent who’s already dead.

MITSUBA ACADEMY: DEMON HUNTERS 2

An RP about school life, having fun and punching demons until they explode

Mitsuba is almost the model of a stereotypical anime town. A medium-sized town of leafy, picturesque neighbourhoods set among rolling green hills, Mitsuba has one elementary, middle and high school that almost every kid in town attends, a quaint shopping district, a large department store that draws the ire of proprietors from said shopping district, a temple staffed solely by inexplicably teenage mikos, a river bank whose only purpose seems to be for students to loaf around and even a bunch of wind turbines that seem to be there just to set the mood.

Mitsuba No.1 High School (there is no No.2. It’s a long story) is an average-sized high school, generally seen as a safe and conducive place for learning. The school offers a variety of clubs and societies catering interests ranging from the usual sports like baseball, kendo and basketball to pursuits like cooking or light music (a club that’s always on the verge of closing down, for some reason.)

Among these clubs is the Literature Club… a club that never tries to recruit new members (they just sort of pop up), doesn’t seem to do any activities of note and is generally seen as a group of oddballs. Naturally, the student body swirls with rumours about what the club members and their advisor, the foreign languages teacher Mr. Lavalley, are up to – the fact that some previous members seem to have vanished without a trace doesn’t help either.

All the rumours are wrong. Except for the theories of that one crazy third-year who always wears a hat for some reason, and no one listens to him anyway.

The Literature Club’s true purpose is far more outlandish – and far more important than most might think. Mitsuba was founded atop a Hellmouth, a place where the boundaries between this world and another are more like ‘polite suggestions’. There are several scattered around the world, but Mitsuba’s one is particularly active – local old wives’ tales tell of evil spirits and strange happenings, and in this case, there’s truth to them. Creatures from beyond this realm – what the legends refer to as demons and devils – seek to pierce the boundary and enter reality, using mortal cats’ paws and summoned thralls to set the stage for their arrival. Even a single Demon’s arrival upon this planet could spell untold destruction, as their very presence distorts reality itself, leaving entire regions uninhabitable for decades. Mr. Lavalley knows this all too well, and has gathered and trained the Literature Club’s students, a select few privy to the town’s secrets and capable of wielding the magical forces capable of taking Demons down, for a single mission.

They are to find the things man was never meant to know. And they are to kill them.

Yeah, so this is an anime-style urban fantasy RP set at a high school. You go to school, you do student things, you have fun, you laugh, you cry, and after hours, you go into abandoned lots and beat demon cultists until they stop trying to end the world. You get the picture. So here's what you probably need to know:

Mitsuba: Obviously fictional. Is a medium-sized Japanese town on the outskirts of Tokyo --think Inaba from Persona 4 or DUWANG Morioh from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. You get the idea.

Mitsuba No. 1 High School: There is no Mitsuba No.2 High School. There never was a Mitsuba No.2 High School. Students have to be in uniform -- dark blue blazer, shirt with tie and long pants for the boys, dark blue blazer, shirt with tie and skirt for the girls. The dress code no longer applies when you are knee-deep in demon-spawn guts.

The Literature Club: Supervised by Mr. Lavalley, a fabulously haired foreign man who teaches French, the club consists of a small handful of students -- i.e. you guys. The RP's starting off at the start of the school year, so you'll probably join up shortly after the story's beginning if you're a freshman or transfer student, and you're already in the club and basking in the adoration of your adorable kohais if you're a second or third-year student. You could be from middle school (or elementary school, God forbid) if you really wanted to, though.

Magic: There are few sources of magic in this world. Most of them stem from artifacts known as Demon Reapers, rare and powerful items that grant magical powers to the few people that can wield them. The method of making them has been essentially lost to the ages, and most of them are passed down Demon hunter clans for generations, and others are sacred treasures owned by temples or churches, only loaned out to people who they can trust. They can take on pretty much any form, and can grant almost any power within reason -- you know, no obliterating the entire town, bringing back the dead or reversing time, that kind of thing. You could defeat mortal servants and demon-spawn with conventional weapons (though it's difficult), but a true Demon can only be destroyed by magical weaponry. If you don't want to start off owning a Demon Reaper, Lavalley-sensei happens to have a few that need new users.

The presence of magic or demonic activity often causes disruption of electronics and recording equipment, nausea, short-term memory loss in people who can't use magic and in more serious cases, unconsciousness. (And death if you, say, get hit by a fireball.)

Some humans can manifest magic on their own. These humans, normally formed due to the extended exposure to a Hellmouth when they were babies, are known as Transcendents. Unfortunately, most Transcendents cannot properly control their powers, and either end up killing themselves or everyone around them when their abilities go out of control. However, in some rare cases, they learn to manage their unusual abilities, and end up mastering them for the sake of combating the demons that crawl out of the very Hellmouth that granted them their powers.

Demons: No, you can't be a Demon. That's like going into a D&D game and saying "I'd like to play as Cthulhu". In fact, no one's seen a Demon fully manifest for the last 15 years, fortunately. Most Demons are immortal, incredibly powerful and usually have the accumulated knowledge of centuries behind them, but thankfully can't enter our reality under normal circumstances. They use their influence to enlist mortal cats' paws, granting them some measure of their dark powers in exchange for setting the stage to summon the Demon directly into the world. Those working for Demons are known as Warlocks, and possess twisted mirrors of the Reapers' powers, in addition to being able to summon mindless demon-like servants called Thralls to serve them.

Some Reapers are of Demonic origin, and using them leaves oneself open to the influence of the Demon that created it. Eventually, such cursed weapons will subvert the wielder's will to the Demon's cause.

How About Half-Demons? They exist, and inherit some of their parent's powers. There's a catch, too -- Just as a person wielding a demonic Reaper is open to suggestion from the Demon which created them, half-demons, also known as Scions, perpetually hear the whispers of their Demonic forebear within their heads. This usually drives them insane, though the most strong-willed of them can withstand the voices... for a while. If there's more than one of them in the RP, I demand that they fight and kill each other. They're supposed to be incredibly rare.

Killing a Demon: They're pretty much immortal -- however, a Demon's body can be destroyed before it has has fully crossed over to this world. This banishes the Demon and weakens them, preventing them from returning... for a while. If a Demon fully crosses over to the material plane, it can be killed for good by destroying the core at the center of its body -- however, seeing that a fully manifested Demon could shrug off a nuclear blast and fully regenerate within hours, this is an unlikely event, to say the least.

Well, if there's any questions, feel free to post em here. All this is kinda flexible and can be changed if you bother me enough. This RP's open to everybody. If you drop off the face of the forum, however, don't blame me if your character is abducted by cultists and used as a tentacle monster's drinking cup.

Name: Keiko Mitsuya, also known as Berserker

Age: 16

Appearance: In the past, Keiko used to wear her long, blonde hair in twin ponytails which she called "Mjolnir's Twin Hammers", but times have changed. Now, she has it hanging down her back, being the envy of many girls of her age. She is short for a 16 year old, and can normally be seen carrying around a bokken (called the "Raigeki") tied to her belt. See here for a character image.

Personality: Unlike many teenaged girls her age, Keiko does not engage in social activities such as shopping, gossiping and talking about boys. No. Her main past-times involve swinging the Raigeki 1000 times a day, tracking down the movements of demons, and stalking her Senpai. Unfortunately, ever since her family moved out of Fuyukaba city, she lost contact with her Senpai, and instead spends the time telling everyone around her the amazing and wonderful tales of her Senpai's heroic accomplishments against the forces of darkness and evil.

Bio: Born and raised in Fuyukaba, a small town in the middle of nowhere, Keiko Mitsuya grew up in awe of her Senpai, the Great Demon Lord, who taught her the 72 Shadow Arts of Darkness at the tender age of 10. As such, she has never grown out of that mindset, fervently believing that one day her secret Demon-slaying skills will come in handy. She has a habit of jumping out of bushes and scaring people, attacking them with the "Super Raigeki Break" attack (which involves her swinging her bokken down on the unsuspecting victim's head). However, at the age of 14, a life-changing event happened: A real, genuine Demon attack broke out in Fuyukaba, and she was only saved by her Senpai who arrived in the nick of time, wielding a flaming blade.

Nobody believed her stories as everyone attributed it to her imagination, but Keiko knew what was going on. Before her parents went overseas to work and she was to be sent to Tokyo to stay with her grandparents, Keiko's Senpai gave her his famous parting words: "Continue my legacy, Berserker."

These words now form Keiko's life goal. She will hold the tides against the unending forces of darkness. She will be the sole light that shines where others have fallen. She will take up the mantle of the Great Demon Lord, and she will wear it proudly, for she is the Berserker.

Ability: Chuuni Sense - Keiko has no magical abilities whatsoever. However, she has met Demons in the past in Fuyukaba city, and has witnessed a demon fight firsthand (although she experienced massive headaches afterwards). Due to her uncanny ability to make believe and imagine fight scenes in her head, she is able to predict the location of Demons even if she cannot see them directly.

Raigeki - A legendary and all-powerful blade that is said to have cut through legions of Demons... or so Keiko claims. It's just an ordinary wooden practice sword. Really.

Others: Yes. She is a chuuni.

Name: Raiha Shirakawa

Age: 18

Appearance: Raiha has straight, anime-esque red hair. He's fit for a high school student and is a perpetual smiler. In battle, he wears a red and white Vicar outfit in addition to a black cloak embroiled with a red cross

s8emmx7.png

Personality: He is observant and level-headed for the most part, though his common sense leaves something to desire. A romanticist who likes to think the sky is blue because it reflects the color of the ocean, he spends his free time writing web novels under the pen name Sir Tiffy Cashien. Outside of combat and school, Raiha likes to turn his brain off.

Ability: Saint Theresa of the Iron Halo's relic - A silver cross containing echoes of a deceased Saint. It grants its user a plethora of side powers in addition to its main ability, which is unparalleled mastery over the elements of air and lightning.

Prayers: As is the norm for most Knights, Raiha can make use of prayers to bring about miraculous effects such as healing, fortification, fire breathing, etc.. While these offer versatility in combat, they drain his Resplendence at disproportional rate given how his training has always been about making the most out of his relic's power. Because of this, Raiha singled out only fortification and healing as his powers of choice.

Hammerspace: The relic can materialize/dematerialize objects within reasonable size and weight amidst flashes of lightning and booms of thunder.

Blade of Mercy: A western sword made from obsidian hilt and a double edged blade inscribed with a crimson cuneiform pattern found in the Hammerspace, far too gigantic to be practical in battle. That is until...

Flying Thundergod: An advanced technique that turns its user into lightning and transports him to a previously designated location, aka teleportation.

Okay. So I totally want to join this. But I don't have any new character ideas to throw around right now. So I kinda want to use the Azuma siblings that never got used properly in Socerers II B/C they are awesome. Of course, I'd have to change certain things to match, but since you helped with them West, you should have a slight idea about them. Would they be a problem? If so, I'll just reference other characters until I get one that fits :3 THANKS!

Name: Shu Kagaiba

Age: 17

Appearance: As with his personality, Shu has two distinct looks. At school his dark brown hair hangs to his chin and frames his face with bangs covering his forehead and touching the top of the black rimmed glasses he wears. When out and about on the demon killing side, Shu removes his fake glasses and pulls his hair back into a messy ponytail on the back of his head. He also adds two fang-shaped earrings to his left ear and a gold ring on his right.

Personality: Shu has a distinct personality that he hides whenever he attends school. At school he is demure, quiet, and studious. One might take him to somewhat of a model student except his grades were never that amazing. He keeps himself to himself and makes few friends. However, when not in school, his persona takes on a more wild side. Shu rarely ponders and instead heads into things without thought, a smile usually plastered on his face no matter his feelings; he could be overflowing with anger, his stare ready to kill, and yet his smile would remain.

Bio: Before his death, Shu’s dad was a slayer of demons himself; using his powers gained by being a Transcendent to defend the humans. However, his great power eventually turned on him and the resulting explosion killed Shu’s two older brothers and his younger sister. His mother, by the thread of a thread, survived and to this day blames the demon Shu’s father was fighting for his death. Vowing revenge, she stole her grandmother’s Demon Reaper and travelled to the most active Hellmouth she had heard of; Mitsuba. She took Shu with her claiming no other could care for him as well as her; with an ulterior motive of training him in the arts of demon killing. Thus from the age of 15, Shu took up active Demon killing duty from his mother, using the Demon Reaper she had previously stolen.

Ability: Shu’s ability comes from a Demon Reaper that takes the form of two straight shirasaya short swords. He calls them Kuronarabi and wields them with a high proficiency. When Shu draws blood with one of the blades, even a drop will do, the Crane (as in the bird) etched into the blades colours black with a comparative amount to the blood drawn. Once the Cranes are completely black (it can be on one blade or both) a shimmering black energy covers the blade and extends its length to that of a standard katana. Now, if Shu can cut the flesh, the cut will sever the part from edge to edge regardless of the size of the actual cut Shu inflicts. The wounds are cauterised closed with energy as opposed to heat.

Other: Nothing I can think of.

Just to let everyone know, the mood of this RP will be pretty light-hearted. It will follow the same style as the original Fuyukaba RP, meaning the battles are cool yet tough, while time is still allocated in between fights for silly, sometimes awkward "Social Link" (character development) scenes.

There may be a little angst near the end, when the bad guy seems to be winning, but it is usually overcome by the team's sheer determination. So not too much angst.

Your character should have several possible love interests a la true Shounen style, but ultimate end up with the OTP (One True Pairing). These love interests may or may not be involved in Demon fighting, but will usually take on a more supportive role.

Basically, if you've read mangas like One Piece or Naruto, take it to the extreme and you've got Mitsuba Academy. :)

There is... Kind of a problem with Sir Vey Lance's character.

That is, having a Demon fully manifest is basically equivalent to nuking the town in question.

The Azumas would have to be scaled down to fit the power level of this party, I guess. These kids are far from Contender-level and might never make it all the way there. How do you suggest they come across their powers?

Okay, we might have worked out how Raiha will work. But it will involve some tweaking (will contact you privately about that).

I got wind that a few more people were interested. That means having like 7-8 people in a single RP, which could slow stuff down to a crawl.

So here's the resolution: the Art Club, whose members have mostly graduated or quit, is getting a new teacher this year. He, too, knows about the Demonic threat and is recruiting help.

So there's two separate plots going on in town, each in its own thread to minimize the clutter. You could post in the other thread if you're interacting with the other club. I'll be running things on the Lit Club side and Timey's in charge of the other.

Name: Erize Umeda

Age: 17

Appearance:

FymKSiy.jpg

Personality:

Erize projects a more timid and clumsy image than is actually the case, but there is truth at the base of it. She wants to succeed and do well, but is too fearful of failure. As such, deliberately holding herself back gives her a convenient way to dodge failure - she can just console herself that if she wasn't trying to look vulnerable then she would've succeeded. When the stakes are high she'll do her best, though ever paranoid it won't be good enough. If she is to ever truly realize her potential, she must overcome her doubts.

Bio:

A curse was placed on Erize upon her birth, dictating that her panty zone (referred to hereafter as ZONE) could be viewed by nobody, under pain of lasers, until she received a kiss from her one true love. While this caused her a lot of problems when young, she has come to accept the curse as a gift. Ever since some creep tried to peek at ZONE and was met with only a scorched face and regret, Erize has used ZONE to help her trap evildoers. By wandering seedy streets at night and acting gullible and vulnerable, she entraps bad people and exposes them to the full power of ZONE. Not only is she ridding the world of some evils, but she is making people think twice about targeting someone who looks vulnerable.

Upon moving to Mitsuba and enrolling in the high school there, she continued her crime fighting activities around town. Rumours of her started to spread again, and she was soon enlisted at school to help with demon fighting. Although she has not as much experience employing ZONE against demons as against humans, she had encountered demons before, and with her own curse/power was always all too aware of the strange things that exist in the world.

Abilities/Skills:

ZONE -- Anyone who glimpses ZONE takes a laser or lasers to the face, depending how long they try to look. There is perpetual bright light in ZONE, so even if one tries to peek despite the consequences, they will never actually see anything. Erize can also cause the lasers to shoot outward from ZONE in specific directions as she desires. The Lasers, when concentrated, pack enough force to also launch her off the ground, enabling her to gain some (limited) airtime and rain lasers down from ZONE above. She can charge the lasers for more powerful effects, but that of course takes more time.

Others:

He has a significant secret that few know about.

Okay kids, Mr Akira Miyamoto will be in charge of the Art Club. He can't draw, but he has volunteered to (permanently) be the model instead. Members of the Art Club will be DD, Yajuu, Sanzi and Wst. Everyone else is in the Lit Club.

Also, we forgot to mention that there is one other way that humans can fight Demons, and that is through the holy power granted by being a member of the Church. These powers are specifically designed to combat Demons and are sometimes more effective than using Demon Reapers. Of course, your character has to be a member of the Church in order to wield these holy powers.

It's okay, he's already earned the standard issue Church Nice Hat. Whether or not he now sounds like Kotomine Kirei is a different matter.

Character!

Name: Erin Lafayette

Age: 16

Appearance: Of average height and build, short blonde hair tied back into a tail, green eyes. Basically, looks like Saber.

Personality: Erin is sarcastic and forthright, and isn't very accustomed to Japanese etiquette, leading her to appear as being rather rude. However, she cares deeply for what few friends she has and will stick by them in times of need. In battle, she never hesitates to leap right into the fray, something her adoptive father has chided her for many times in the past.

She finds her father's often-flamboyant mannerisms and seemingly psychic ability to know what she's up to a little embarrassing, and doesn't want to join the Literature Club, as seeing his face for practically the whole day would drive her mad.

Bio:

Erin's mother was killed by a Warlock as a human sacrifice when she was very young, and her father's whereabouts are unknown. She was raised by Mr. Lavalley for as long as she can remember, and sees him as her father.

When she was 12, a Warlock attacked the Lavalley household, and in desperation, she grabbed a battle axe that had been placed on the mantelpiece as a trophy to try and fend him off -- to her surprise, it turned out to be a Demon Reaper, and she subdued him with the aid of the members of the Literature Club. That was when she learned about Demons, and at her father's behest, she took up practicing with the weapon to protect herself against those who might target her.

She is entering high school this year, and has resolved not to join the Literature Club.

Ability:

Overdrive: Erin's Demon Reaper greatly augments her life force, which accelerates her reflexes, physical strength and the speed that she heals from injuries. In addition, it increases the acuity of her senses, even extending to letting her see in the near infrared spectrum.

In addition, she can channel this force into mending others' injuries, though this weakens her. She is capable of channeling her power through her Demon Reaper in several different ways.

Eternal Blaze: This Demon Reaper was once part of Lavalley's collection, languishing without an owner for a few years. It takes the form of a transforming weapon with three modes -- a naginata, a battle axe and a scythe.

Naginata Mode: the weapon's default mode, a defensive form that channels Erin's life force into a protective barrier around her weapon and her to ward off magical attacks. It doesn't do much against weapons wielded by mortal hands, though.

Axe Mode: This mode converts Erin's energy into physical force, allowing her to go toe-to-toe against Thralls... For a while.

Scythe Mode: The most aggressive use of Erin's power. She channels her own life force into its blade and pours it into enemies that she strikes, crippling human targets by speeding their metabolism to untenable levels and tearing Thralls apart from within. This power drains her when used, and is usually only used to end a battle decisively.

Others: Her Demon Reaper accelerates her metabolism greatly, and she spends almost every cent of what her father gives her on food.

Name: Misa Imahara

Age: 17

Appearance: Moderate height, shoulder-length hair

Personality: Fears pain and death greatly, but is determined to protect humanity from demons

viXwnuA.jpg

Bio: Born and raised in Mitsuba by ordinary parents, Misa grew up not knowing about the Hellmouth. Getting good grades, getting into a good university, getting a good job, finding a nice man and settling down to start a family – those were the goals she (or her parents, she’s not sure which) set for herself before she stumbled upon the Literature Club’s activities one night. Successful attunement to Geminus came along with a whole new set of responsibilities, secrets and dangers, but as one who has been chosen to fight for humanity, Misa is determined to do her duty.

Ability: Reaper – Geminus: An assault rifle with an underslung grenade launcher and two fish engraved on the grip. When summoned, Geminus comes with two silver grenades, each creating a clone of the wielder on impact. Geminus also creates magazines of ammunition (harmful magic condensed into bullet form) from thin air at a rate proportional to the emotional distress of its wielder.

Each clone has little initiative on its own and can interact with the physical world, but is less ‘solid’ than a normal human. It appears with all the equipment (save the silver grenades) that the wielder had at the time of activation, and obeys the wielder’s mental commands. The wielder can sense a dulled version of what the clone sees, hears, smells, tastes, or feels. Clones dissipate into ambient energy upon receiving catastrophic structural damage.

Others: Misa goes jogging regularly, and enjoys playing computer games and paintball.

Hi Kyo

We shall fight the good fight in your stead

And hopefully not get incinerated, mangled, impaled, decapitated, eviscerated, exsanguinated, crucified, vaporized, annihilated or crushed to death by an elephant on rollerskates as it plays Ode to Joy on a tuba.

Sanzi's already slowing everyone down and he hasn't even created his character yet.

Anyway right now the plan's to split everyone into 2 groups of 4, though I'm sure one group can accommodate 5 if you want to join.
