R [CLOSED] Blood Market (discussion)

You have been tasked with bearing a very sensitive parcel across some very treacherous terrain. Long before the era of gunpowder, your arsenal consists of some rudimentary magical techniques and fine manpowered weaponry. The only thing you know about your parcel is that it is human, and very much alive. You know you are not the only one who will be traveling in this escort.

What you don't know, is who this person is, or why they must be transported in so much secrecy. You have not been told the person's age, sex, class or otherwise affiliation. You have not yet met the other members of your party, but you do have a rendezvous point. You have never met the parcel, and you have no idea if they've actually consented to being transported.

Why would you agree to a risky mission with so many variables?

Because the money is very good.

You are to be paid in full upon delivery of the parcel to a temple within the walls of the fortress city, Shau'ku Moto, and there is to be no payment upon failure. Shau'ku Moto is an ancient stronghold held by the low elves; referred to derogatorily as trolls. While their attunement with magic is deeply primal and elemental (worse, you might say) you would not put it past a troll to bend you over their knee and break your back.

Relationships between the high elves and the trolls are "okay". Humans also exist, thought they are distinctly Asiatic in appearance, and are mostly local only as nomads. Their capital is on the other side of the globe, and have neutral relationships with both trolls and high elves.

The high elves are the only race with a republic instead of a monarchy, however, it is well infiltrated by mafia-style political influence.

Your journey will take you from the Forest of Enchanted Trees, your rendezvous point, 100 miles south to Shau'ku Moto. You have the option of a well-traveled trade route, or a more unconventional path. There is one point you must cross with the trade path though: a half-mile span of bridges across the Gorge of Needles, where sturdy rope suspension bridges cross a deep chasm, punctuated by pillars of stone. The chasm stretches for miles to either side, and the river that once ran through used to mark the territory limits of the high and low elves. It is about halfway through your journey.

So who are you?

A scruffy man in an almost comically ruined cloak is taking names at a local tavern. He is one of many recruiting in bars around the High Elf capital Quel'duvir and in neighboring hamlets.

Name: Mirova Darkstalker

Appearance:
tumblr_mt068u3lFa1qkgfeqo5_250.jpg

Mirova is a striking figure. Taller than even the high elf average, he cuts a leanly muscled profile, akin to a wildcat. His movements, too, are feline, languidly graceful usually but lightning-quick when his reflex kicks in. His face boasts high cheekbones, narrow gray eyes, an elegantly sloping yet somewhat large nose, and smooth lips. His black hair is silky and glossy, cascading down to mid-back. His pointed ears are pierced and cuffed, with dangling chains and minimal jewels. He tends to wear black or muted colors, sometimes royal purple, midnight blue, and hunter green.

His demonic form is quite a ways more savage. His body is cloaked in deep violet, almost black, smoke and his skin coated in blood and soot. His teeth become sharp, and his eyes go pure white.

Strengths and Abilities:
Mirova's family comes from a long line of demon-affiliated dark magicians. He is strongest at night, able to manipulate shadows and darkness into pure offensive energy. He's old and trained enough to summon demons to do his bidding, as well. Usually he likes to summon a demon steed, whose hooves are ablaze with deep purple fire, as is its mane and eyes. He can also take in so much dark energy that he temporarily assumes demonic form, giving him heightened strength and sending him into a bloodthirsty berserker-like trance.

He's strong for sure, but his agility and speed far outdo his strength.

Weaknesses:
Light magic is particularly harmful to him, as is the case with dark magicians. His powers are less effective in the daylight hours.

Personality:
Mirova is an intimidating elf of few words, with a calmness to him that tends to make others uneasy (not to mention the demon familiars). He's rather straightforward, saying only what he means and that includes his thoughts, however brutally honest they may be. His humor is rather dry and dark. As a dedicated introvert, he prefers his solitude and becomes quite easily irritated by annoying chatter and crowded situations. Even though he socializes regularly as a member of the elite, he bows out before the night is done just to wind back down. He would never stand for being second-best, and so, is one of the most irritating perfectionists ever.

Background:
Despite his family's wealth and status, the Darkstalkers are subject to strange looks here and there by the majority of society. Dark arts have passed down through the bloodline, and while not uncommon, there is still a hesitant social taboo surrounding dark magicians. Mirova, like the rest of his family, doesn't pay much attention to what others think; instead, he focuses all his energy on becoming the best he can at the dark arts.

Motive:
Money, while admittedly nice, isn't something Mirova really requires. Mostly he's in it to prove his ability and utility, both to himself as well as to his doubting community.

This sure looks intersting. I've been trying to write a character already but it is a bit hard without examples.

I'm still stuck on a few of the details such as the names, the extent of magic ability (what would be common? what would be exceptional? what would be impossible?) and what kind of factions are involved in the story. But otherwise I have an idea for my role and can edit the character in this post when I am finished.

Excellent lineup so far guys >:J

OKAY so for world building here; Naming conventions for high elves I pinch from World of Warcraft. First names are a little more ambiguous but they pair with last names like "Dawnweaver" or "Sunstrider" or some two-part adjective-infinitive form.

Troll naming I based off Swahili.

For magical abilities, fairly standard RPG rules: nature-based magical users are shamans, elemental-based are mages, and necromantic powers make you a warlock. Consider yourself a manipulator of the available: if you have sunlight and oxygen, you can conjure fire; if you have a river running by, you can draw the flow of water against gravity to your will. If you're by a graveyard, you can raise dead flesh or bones and give them a piece of your consciousness to do your bidding. Skill is proportional to years of study, making magic users more physically weak, and meaning it would be rare to be skilled at more than one discipline/element whathaveyou unless you're damn ancient. Extreme examples of power would be an earth-mage causing an earthquake, a water-mage drawing a cloud down out of the sky. Powers are more generally localized, especially for the average user.

Existant races are Humans, High Elves, and Low Elves. Nomadic humans are generally accepted everywhere. High elves and Low elves aren't at war, but High Elves tend to look upon Low Elves as under-evolved tree-huggers while the High Elves are more concerned with their crafting guilds building huge, beautiful modern cities. Humans are primarily village-centered but are ruled by a central Emperor. Within the high elves specifically, class warfare is a huge issue, as money is directly related to political influence. Low-class high elves tend to be employed in city jobs in janitorial/maintenance jobs, or textile factories, that sort of menial labor.

Technology-wise, vehicles are carts and carriages driven by llama as the pack animal of choice. They are common in the cool climate of the elven territory and high elves consider them more comfortable and beautiful than horses. Manufacturing of everything besides cloth is done primarily on the individual crafter's scale, with the loom making it profitable to underpay hundreds of destitute elves to churn out plentiful fabrics for high fashion. Special fabrics with fine thread or intricate patterns are still woven by expert crafters, but wealthy (and pseudo-wealthy) High Elves have a high demand for new clothing and up-to-date styles.Running water is supplied to the city public in fountains and indoors at special establishments from tall aqueducts that run above the city.

That's all I got for now... I'll post a profile later. Welcome aboard  :D

The Parcel

Name: Eyr Songweaver

Appearance: About fourteen, skinny, pale, and androgynous. His voice has not changed yet, and he's hairless save for wavy black locks that fall to his shoulders. His hair is cut so that a fringe bang falls over part of his eyes. His wrists, waist, and neck are exceptionally slender, and coupled with the fact that he's been dressed in women's patterned robes, his appearance is deceiving to the undiscerning eye. He's only 5 feet tall.

Strengths and Abilities: Being young and affluent, he isn't very good at anything yet. The Songweavers have a long history as court bards from the old monarchy days, so Eyr's only strengths are a thorough knowledge of literature, and a skill for crafting lies. He wants to be an archer, because he thinks it looks beautiful, but he can't pull back a string yet. His family wasn't really behind him learning a weapon instead of a magic, either.

Weaknesses: His size and strength make him easy to pick up and carry off. He has a temper that will often get him into trouble, coupled with his ability to believe he's always more intelligent than you.

Personality: A little twerp. Savor his moments of silence, because he likes to tell you what's on his mind... especially when he disagrees.

Background: He's the youngest boy in the Songweaver household, with two younger sisters, three older brothers and an older sister. His family is somewhat atypical in how many children they had, but there's some debate as to whether or not they all share the same parents, as well. His parents and older siblings are busy socialites, and his younger sisters are twins, so for Eyr, life was mostly keeping to his books and not doing anything his parents would notice was bad. He got away with a lot of shit, not limited to evening strolls around deserted parts of town. Recently, that had a bad turnout for him.

Motive: Does not want to be here.

No after it hit over three, three being my usual max, I know I would crumble. Plus fantasy isn't entirely my bag. I just liked the cargo idea a lot. No offense to you or anybody else... I would type a heart but this stupid qwerty keyboard doesn't have a bracket :p

Name: Saya

Appearance: Saya is slightly tall for human woman, but it's not very noticeable unless you're standing in front of her, as she doesn't have a very large presence, physically. She's slim, with more muscle than body fat but not buff by any means; rather, she's simply trim from fencing, and lean from traveling a long way on foot. Her clothes are simple and a little worn, consisting of a few warm-colored tunics, simple trousers of varying length, and a light brown cloak. She has a modest bust and a slender waist that tapers out to slightly more generous hips, but her legs and her rear catch more attention from men than anything else. Her hair is a deep, warm brown that seems much lighter, almost honey-tinted, in the sun. It falls straight, a little past her shoulder blades, and she doesn't mess with it too much, either tying it up or leaving it like it is, sometimes with some simple ornament. Her eyes are narrow and similarly deceiving in color, the flecks of green only visible through the brown when in the light. She has a pointed nose and a wide mouth that makes for infectious smiles.

Strengths and Abilities: Equipped with a bow and a rapier, both of which she can use well. She's not especially strong, but she's quick, and has sharp reflexes. She knows some simple magic, enough to help in a tight spot or start a campfire, but not much else. With a rapier in her hand, however, she's difficult to touch.

Weaknesses: Easy to subdue, physically, if she's disarmed and has nowhere to run. Also very susceptible to being fooled/scammed by a pretty face.

Personality: Saya is the cheerful sort, for the most part. She makes conversation easily, and she's not especially timid or self-conscious - she may even be considered a little shameless. In a tight spot she can be a bit snarky, and she is prone to the occasional dark mood, but she tends to bounce out of those moods just as quickly as they come upon her. She's definitely one to focus on the present moment. She can also be a bit of a showoff around women.

Background: Raised in a common sort of village, Saya's childhood was peaceful, if rather sheltered. She grew up on and was fascinated by stories of great magic and the dealings of elves, creatures she had never so much as seen up close before she left her little town. In her adolescence her interest in these stories, and in magic itself, only grew, but she found she had very little access to the knowledge she wanted at home. She nursed dreams of seeing the great Quel'duvir herself one day, and of learning the secrets of magic, until eventually her desire was too great to ignore. She left home with a sword, a bow, and her wit... but not a lot of coin.

Motive: While she very much needs the money if she hopes to attend any reputable magic academy, this job seems awfully fishy, and she's too nosy to butt out.

Sorry for the wait, I wanted to post him earlier but he needed some last minute rewriting and before you know it it's 2:30 am!

Name: Cirith

Appearance: A high elf of 27 years, with light blue eyes, very short brown hair and a short beard. Standing just above average height and with a lean but strong physique from years of combat training. Cirith dresses in browns and greys and prefers to wear steel-reinforced leather armour under his tan greatcoat and a strong steel gauntlet on his off-hand.

Strengths and Abilities: Cirith has received an education fitting a son of a rich family and years of combat training from well paid tutors and instructors. He also has skill in infiltration and generally knows how to blend in. his weapon of choice is his rapier and he styles himself after the duellists of fame from the big cities.

Weaknesses: Although he has received training in magic and understands the basic principles, Cirith has never had a mind for magic and is therefore also susceptible to it. Also with the exception of his skill with the sword and the duel, Cirith is a Jack of all trades, master of none. There are many mercenaries better than him and as an agent he lacks experience.

Personality: A friendly and well mannered individual. Cirith is calculating and careful in conversation although it might not look like that with his laid-back attitude. Because of his profession Cirith has become a man of masks, adjusting his role to blend in and achieve his goals, the few traits that are his own are his loyalty and his dependability.

Background: Cirith was adopted into the Highbuilder family at an early age by Bartolomeo Highbuilder, the younger brother of the head of the family. Cirith was raised by Bartolomeo like a son and prepared for a very special task for the family.

Cirith would become part of the network of spies and informants which aided in keeping house Highbuilder one of the most influential families of power in the land. recieving combat training and an education fitting a son of high birth Cirith also was trained in secret by his father in the ways of intrigue and infiltration, spending years of preperation to create an agent with unwavering loyalty

8 years ago, after a staged assassination attempt on his uncle in which Cirith had seemingly been severely injured, Cirith disappeared from the world of high society and he assumed his position in the network his adoptive father had build. He began working his way up in the world as a sell-sword and bodyguard, slowly slipping into the web of intrigue of other families and all the while making sure his family’s interests were protected.

Motive: Cirith would tell you he’s purely in it for the money, however his true goal is finding out more about the job and the reasons for this secretive transportation of someone to the lands of the trolls, acting as an agent for his father’s spy network.

Ahaha, wonderful c: I'm about to start a reply~

EDIT:
Also, I noticed Cirith doesn't really have much in the way of a facial description in his profile.. Could you give us a couple details to go off of? Just hair/eyes/face would be helpful, haha, since you covered his height, physique, and apparel.

EDIT2:

Yay a post!

Unfortunately, though, I have some news. I didn't think these plans were going to go through, but it turns out I'm going to Texas tomorrow, for a friend of a friend's wedding. SO, I'm not exactly sure when I'll be able to post. I can try to do it tonight after I finish packing if no one else wanted to post first, because I'm not sure how much downtime I'll have while I'm out of state, but otherwise I believe I'll be back on Sunday. Sorry for the short notice!
