Murder Mystery [Game Over]

137 posts in this topic

You arrive at Banks Manor amidst a terrible storm and hurry inside to join the other guests. You were invited by the eccentric trillionaire, Mr Banks, to participate in what he boasted would be a most thrilling game unlike anything money could buy - which also promised a monetary reward too staggering to pass up. Assembled with the other guests in the foyer, you pick up a copy of the information sheet others are already browsing.

Introduction

You have been invited here to participate in a game of wit, resolve, and most importantly death. One of your number is tasked with killing a specific few of you without being discovered. If he/she accomplishes this goal, he/she will be rewarded with the prize money and allowed to be on their way. The rest of you will not be permitted to leave, ever, unless you manage to deduce the murderer before they accomplish their goal. Each player must make an attempt to investigate a part of the manor each night, and guest bedrooms are safe zones - murders may only take place in the other rooms of the manor. The manor is at your disposal for the duration of the game, please enjoy your stay.

Guidelines for Innocents

During the day (48 hours), you will gather together, discuss events, and present evidence. There are several actions you may also take during the day. All day actions should be invoked publicly (eg. "I want to Converse with DayDreamer, he always has interesting things to say that you should pay attention to)". You may perform as many or as few of these actions as you wish, but each may be performed only once per day:

  • Converse with a player. This will reveal their Skills to you.
  • Vote for a room to meet in the next day. The room that the group chooses to meet in will be Investigated by all players, essentially revealing all available information on that room. The Vote will be decided by majority. If no votes are cast, a room will be selected at random.
  • Vote for a player to be Searched. This will publicly reveal the Inventory of that player. You may do this once per game only, and 50% of living players must agree.
  • Vote to Accuse a player of being the murderer. 50% of the living players must agree on a single player for the Accusation to be enacted. If the Murderer is Accused, the Innocents win. If an Innocent is Accused, the Innocents lose.

During the night (48 hours), you have a different action you may perform. Innocent actions will be performed BEFORE Murderer actions. Night actions should be PMed to the GM.

  • Investigate a room. This will reveal some of the room's Inventory, you may take an item if you wish, but only once per game. Investigating a room leaves you vulnerable to being murdered in that room.

Guidelines for the Murderer

During the day, you have the exact same actions available to you as the Innocents.

During the night, you have several different actions available to you. Murderer actions will be performed AFTER Innocent actions. Night actions should be PMed to the GM. You may perform as many or as few of these actions as you wish, but they must be conducted in order:

  • Stalk a player. This will reveal to you which room the player has Investigated that night.
  • Investigate a room. This will reveal to you the entirety of the room's Inventory. You may put 1 item from the room you Investigate into your Inventory. You may also leave 1 item from your Inventory in the room.
  • You may, if there is another player Investigating the room you choose to Investigate, Plant an item from your Inventory into their Inventory - they will not be aware of it. However, some players will be immune to this - it is a gamble. If they are immune, you will fail and they will be made aware of the attempt (but not of your identity), and you will not be able to perform the rest of your actions for that night.
  • Murder a player. You must have a Deadly object in your Inventory, or use one you discover in the room the Murder takes place in. You must also know what room your target player is in. You should choose what item(s) to use, as well as detail any extraneous details you wish to include for fun. The GM will rewrite your details when presenting the murder details, so as to obscure your writing style, but beware of showing too much of your personality in your Murders. When detailing the Murder, you must also choose whether to keep the item used in the Murder, or whether to leave it at the scene.

Tips for Innocents

  • Each day each player should present any information they have gathered, and players should attempt to cross-reference figure out what facts can be taken as definite truths. That is, any one player may lie, but since there is only one Murderer, any two players with the same information thus prove their information to be truth. It may be advisable to keep notes on what you know as fact.
  • Items have different Skill requirements to be wielded for use in Murders. Thus, finding the murder weapons is very useful to narrowing the suspects. But remember that the Murderer may use a combination of items, and the state of the body may not reveal the actual cause of death - the only way to avoid the Murderer misleading you about their Skills is to try to keep track of all the items in each room, so that you can know if something else was taken/used (sleeping pills or other drugs will be the most likely item to watch out for, as these will let the Murderer perform kills with items that would normally require higher Strength or Dexterity than they may possess.
  • The Murderer will start with a special personal item that may be used for Murders, and the only way to discover this item is to happen to Search the player.
  • Murder items may only be used once. They may not be used to commit multiple murders because reasons.

Tips for the Murderer

  • Beware of things mentioned in the tips for Innocents.
  • You can use multiple items to stage elaborate Murders. Additionally, some item combinations may be used to destroy evidence (fires/explosions), and may be used in an otherwise empty room in place of a Murder.
  • You only have to kill your Targets to win the game, however you may wish to kill other players who are on your trail.

Characters/Players

I have decided against characterizing player characters (I am not good at thinking up characters), instead simply assigning some names which should be used during the game. Players are free to characterize their own character as they choose.

Valentine - Mr Valentino

Noia - Miss Noir

Bleck - Mr Bleckingham

Pain - Miss Painelope
Seanzilla - Mr Grumpypants
Trioctium - Mr Octavius
Kyo - Mr Buckfum
DragonGuard - Mr Orad

Pain - Miss Painelope
Nikkia - Miss Nikita
Ethereal - Mr McEth
ack! - Miss Featherbottom

The game is now open. The Murderer will be receiving a PM informing them who they are shortly. For the first day, everyone is gathered outside the house and there are no clues yet. The first thing to do is simply introduce yourselves to each other, Converse if you wish, and Vote for what room to meet in (and thus investigate as a group) on the next day.

Days again last 48 hours, but I may end this first day early once everyone has voted, since there's nothing particular to ponder about yet.

EDIT: Also urp, these are the rooms in the mansion to choose from:

  • Garage
  • Billiards Room
  • Library
  • Lounge Room
  • Study
  • Kitchen/Freezer
  • Dining Room
  • Janitor's Room
  • Groundskeeper's Shed
  • Laundry
  • Bathroom
  • Garden

A man covered in a brown overcoat removes it with a flourish and shakes the excess rain off. He is Hispanic in features, tan skin with dark brown eyes and a thin black moustache. Dressed in a sharp white suit with a matching white fedora hat, a cuban cigar hangs from the corner of his mouth.

(pretend I have a moustache. lol)

"My name," he says, with pomp and circumstance, "Is Mr. Valentino," He takes a drag of his cigar and tasting the smoke, exhales slowly, "I am a man of wealth, but as my mother once told me - if I could sell her for a dime, I should. So if doing this little game will increase my fortune, so be it." He took another puff of his cigar and then faced the others, "So, if we are to find this murderer, we should choose a room, no?"

Also I forgot the targets oops. There will be 5 targets. Targets will not be informed who they are, so let your paranoia run wild.

A solemn, sickly-looking man stands in stark contrast next  to Mr Valentino. He wears a beige suit that only serves to accentuate his pallor. This man is McEth. He sneezes abruptly, fumbles in his pocket for his handkerchief and somehow manages to drop it.

He smiles at Mr Valentino ruefully as he bends to retrieve the hanky. He Converses with the outlandish man,"That coat, sir, is a good idea in weather like this. Terribly cold, isn't it? Indeed, this cold will be the death of me..."

"Meanwhile, shall we see if we can get a fire started up in the Lounge?"

He is struck by a coughing fit.

"Where are the kittens? Where are the KITTENS?!?!"

Aurelius Julius Augustus Titus Octavius cast glances from one of his compatriots to the other, waving his hands in extravagant motions. When he realized no one was answering him, he suddenly calmed himself down, walking calmly over to pick up a teacup from the table. "I suggest we follow what he says," Octavius continued, sharply jabbing a finger towards Mr McEth. "He may be a part of themmmmmmememeMAMEMUMEHMOHHHH."

Casting a mean glance towards McEth, Octavius poured the rest of his tea into the fireplace casually before replacing it on the saucer, overturned. Satisfied with his drink, he proceeded to walk towards the Lounge, muttering under his breath all the way. "I knew I shouldn't have went fishing today. I knew I shouldn't have went fishing today."

"What's with all this RP business. I signed up for money not for fun and games. Can we just head to the Lounge already?"

A man in a black three-piece suit, white shirt and grey stood amongst a group of unusual individuals. The ony thing setting Sourbuttzilla Grumpypants apart from the rest was the constantly annoyed look on his face.

After taking a look at everyone around him, he decided to converse the annoyingly loud Octavius. "Hey you! Stop making such a ruckus!"

"Alright, Lounge it is, then."

Noir pushed herself off the wall she was leaning on, dusting off her black dinner dress. Her gold and emerald accessories jingled merrily as she moved, sharply contrasting her soft spoken demeanour. She eyeballed the rest of the invited guests casually, eventually landing on a lady positioned a distance away from a particularly loud elder.

"Miss... Nikita?" Noir called out, trying to converse with her. "Would you want to walk with me?"

Miss Nikita took the woman by the arm, "Let's." They converse, whispering to each other as they walked.

"How much do you know of this Mr. Banks?" she asked Noir as they reached the Lounge. The room was dimly lit by only a large fireplace and they took a seat close to the fire.

Mr Orad entered the scene, a strange rabble of people seemed to have gathered.

A particular man caught his eye, the fellow intrigued him so he went over and Conversed with Bleck Mr Bleckingham.

"As our first course of actions I am in agreement that we should Investigate the Lounge, indeed."

-----

Summary:

Converse with Bleck Mr Bleckingham.

Vote to investigate the lounge.

"I'm in agreement with Mr. Grumpypants, let's go to the lounge already."

MIss Painelope had been silent since her arrival, leaning against a wall and craving a cigarette. People were talking around her, and it was about time she attempted to converse as well.

"Mr Grumpypants, why don't we go through to the lounge now?"

Aurelius Julius Augustus Titus Octavius cast angry glances at all the strange individuals gathered here today, trying to decide which one of them looked most like a homicidal killer. Finally he settled on one face and marched over to her, attempting to strike a friendly conversation with Miss Painelope.

"Where does the fish bish mish go pish bish?! I don't know how it is!!!!! STOP LOOKING AT ME!!!!!!!!!"

"I don't know about you guys, but we should probably search someone." Grumpypants to a look around, wondering who to pick as his first victim. "I don't mind searching Miss Featherbottom. I'll probably end up touching her whether you want it or not."

Miss Featherbottom, keeping silent in the corner of the Lounge was taken aback by Mr. Grumpypants' lack of... Personal space.

"Excuse you!" She said abruptly, slapping Grumpypants' hands away. "Why don't we converse before you start touching me? I promise, I'm more enjoyable after you... Get to know me." She grinned, slyly.

A short, overweight man in a salmon pink shirt and white chinos entered the room, carrying with him a smell of cigars and body odour. He dabbed a hankerchief over his balding, sweaty head and cast his beady eyes over the group that had gathered. His gaze, at last, rested on Miss Painelope, and he approached her to converse,

"Paineleope, is it?" he asked her, "The names Buckfum! Hardy Buckfum! I'm a producer of classy adult movies. I must say there's plenty of talent in here that I could use for my upcoming film..."

"You looked at me first, you gobshite!"

Mr. Octavius was weird, and she wasn't sure she wanted to converse with him. However, he could just be acting weird to throw her off the scent; these people could be tricky. She didn't like them. Apparently, they were going to talk to her anyway.

"Buckfum? Did your parents hate you? Or is it just your porn name? I'm assuming you're in the movies yourself, a man of your good looks and impeccable personal hygiene."

"I like you." Buckfum said with a grin, "You've got moxy!"

He turned to examine the Lounge before bringing his attention back to Miss Painelope. "I heard Grumpypants talking about searching Miss Featherbottom. I know his game! I wouldn't mind a peek under her blouse either, if you get where I'm going, eh?"

The first day has come to a close. Everyone wanders off to their rooms, later to investigate their personal choices. In the morning, the group shall meet up once again in the Lounge Room, and find out who, if any, of them is missing.

<converse results will be PMed now. The Night phase will end in 24 hours or after everyone has chosen their investigation rooms and the Murderer has struck - please PM me which room you wish to investigate. It will be easiest if you do so as a reply to my PM to you about your converse results, so that way a single PM chain between me and you will contain all the details you'll need to keep track of>

EDIT <also anyone who does not PM me a room to investigate will be assigned a random room, since the room you choose will determine where you die if the murderer targets you>

I may extend this phase by a few hours, or at least until the murderer chooses their target. This is because I lost the file with all the room contents and had to recreate it from scratch, so we're like 23 hours into the phase and I've only just let the murderer know what items they may have to use, so an extension is rather necessary.

Morning comes and everyone gathers in the Lounge as agreed the previous day.

The Lounge contains:

Television

Radio

Alcohol

Drinking Glasses

Matches

Guitar

The items in dark red require Strength to be higher than that of the target in order to kill them with it. Light red requires Average or higher Strength. Blue requires Average or higher Intelligence to make any use of, and can only be used in combination with other items. Green requires Average or higher Dexterity. Items in Dark Blue require Above Average Intelligence.

You notice that Miss Featherbottom is missing from the gathering. A quick search of the house results in her completely burned up body being found in the Garden (this is a random room, as ack did not choose a room to investigate at all). What could've so thoroughly and completely burned her?

--

Once again, the gathered guests can Converse with one another, vote to Search someone (just in case people didn't notice, this was changed from its original design, so now it is a one-use per game action just like accusation is) or Accuse someone, and share any information they gathered during the night.

Guests should also Vote on what room they wish to meet again in tomorrow.

"What a waste..." Buckfum sighed, dabbing his sweaty brow with a hankerchief as he was prone to do. "I was going to ask her to be in my next movie. I was going to call it "Featherbottoms Up" but, hey, better her than me!"

"All this smoke is *cough* bad for my lungs," McEth wheezed. "This is terrible. Burnt to death. I pray poor Ms Featherbottoms was dead before the burning."

"What might we deduce from this? Is there oil from somewhere? I intend to spend more time investigating the Garden tonight. Perhaps I might find some clu-" He is interrupted by a coughing fit.

"Might someone else kindly accompany me so we might cover this area more thoroughly? Perhaps you, Mr Octavius?"

"And ah, before I forget, I was sick in the Bathroom last night and couldn't help but notice that there were:

3/6 Items

Painkillers

Curling Iron

Syringe

We should keep an eye on those, shouldn't we?"

He regarded Ms Featherbottoms' charred remains mournfully.

OOC: DayDreamer, even if 2 of us investigated the Garden tonight, there's no guarantee we'll find all 6 (assuming every location has a max of 6 items) items that are here, right? Is it completely random what a character can discover, or are there certain things that can only be found by certain characters? It's also a bit strange flavor-wise that our characters wouldn't investigate the murder setting immediately in the day. xD

Edit: In case it isn't clear, I wish to converse with Octy. I'm publicly declaring my intention to search the Gardens, but will confirm it via PM with DayDreamer.

Yes each search of a room yields 3 random items of the 6 total, so there's no guarantee that if you search the same room twice, you won't find just the same 3 items, or at least some of the same.
