Murder Mystery [Game Over]

137 posts in this topic

Are both of this still valid? So it's possible to take 1 item from the room the Murderer investigates (eg. Lounge), and another 1 item from the room where he commits the murder (Garden)? Plus the item he already has, that's up to 3 items he has?

Does that mean that the Murderer effectively gets to investigate the room in which he kills too?

**Is it correct to assume that if the murderer had removed an item from the Lounge, he removes ALL of it and it shouldn't turn up in our collective search of the Lounge today?

Yes all of that is correct. The only thing is the murderer only gets an item from the room they murder in if they use that item to murder with. They can't just murder someone with something from a different room, then take something from the murder room, unless they have not taken an item already that night.

Yeah I should also clarify, most plural things count as a single unit. In future I should actually be more specific with quantities. But basically, if they were to take say a fork, since the item is "forks", in this case there will still be forks left, however I will indicate (if anyone investigates that room) that one of the forks is missing.

I realized under the guidelines that StalkInvestigate and Murder were listed as separate actions. That means it's possible to say, Stalk ack, then Investigate any room (taking an item from there at the same time), and then Murder Miss Featherbottoms in the Garden since he knows where she is?

Yes they are separate. And what you said is possible.

Does the Murderer's investigation of a location reveal who is in it? That means to say, is it also possible that he Stalked someone else, Investigated the Garden (and found ack there), and then decided to Murder her there?

No, stalking is the only way to find where someone is. This allows them to select a deliberate target. They could instead just pick a room and kill whoever, if anyone, is in it, though.

So to make it clear: They either stalked ack then killed her, or stalked someone else, then decided to kill whoever was in the garden, and that happened to be ack.

If the murderer removed an item from a room and then someone investigated that room, would it show 3/5 instead or would it simulate reality and still show 3/6 (you can only know what's in the room and not what's not in the room)? If it's the latter, then even if 5 people searched the same room at Night, we can never know for sure whether a particular item was removed or we just somehow missed it due to sheer luck, yeah?

I only did the 3/6 thing because I realised that I should let people know how many items are in the room total, and indicate they're only being shown half of them, not all of them. However you've found a big problem indeed. I will go with the method of showing 3/5 etc if there are missing items. I'll also guarantee each investigation of the same room by the same player will yield at least 1 item they did not find before, so that a single person could eventually get the full contents of a room by themselves.

Sorry for the questions. It's just that I'm not sure if all the ideas mentioned in the introduction of the sign-up thread were applied.

Generally it's solely what is in the rules on the first page of this thread. And it is fine to ask questions, because this is sort of a cobbled together thing since it's still not certain what mechanics are best.

Speaking of which I'm changing one of the rules. Night phases will now last 48 hours the same as days do. This is because if the murderer chooses to stalk someone, I have to wait for that person to investigate a room in order to tell the murderer where they went, so more time is needed for the murderer to be given their info so they can make their decision. Additionally, the murderer is also entirely dependent on me to tell them the results of their investigation before they can choose what to kill with, so extra time is needed in case I'm not able to reply to them instantly.

ALSO  I FORGOT SOMETHING SEMI-IMPORTANT: Miss Featherbottom was a Target! 4 Targets remain alive.

OOC: Lastly, is it possible to tell us whether it will be indicated to us when we come by it whether a particular item has been modified or used as a murder weapon?

And I assume the Murderer doesn't have an infinite inventory? Otherwise, he/she can just hold onto all his/her items and murder weapons instead of dropping it to be found later or waste a Night planting it on somebody else. Especially since it's highly unlikely we'll exercise the one-off Search option.

If you find a murder weapon, you will be told about it. And I wasn't gonna limit inventory, but perhaps I should indeed. I'll limit the killer to 3 items.

The second day has come to a close. Everyone wanders off to their rooms, later to investigate their personal choices. In the morning, the group shall meet up once again in the Kitchen, and find out who, if any, of them is missing.

<converse results will be PMed now. The Night phase will end in 48 hours or after everyone has chosen their investigation rooms and the Murderer has struck - please PM me which room you wish to investigate.>

Morning comes and everyone gathers in the Kitchen/Freezer as agreed the previous day.

The Kitchen/Freezer contains:

Frozen Meat

Icicle

Butcher Knife

Oven Lighter

6kg Sack of Potatoes

Frying Pan

It seems everyone has turned up to the meeting today - with all present and accounted for, it seems nobody died last night.

--

Once again, the gathered guests can Converse with one another, vote to Search someone or Accuse someone, and share any information they gathered during the night.

Guests should also Vote on what room they wish to meet again in tomorrow.

Noir drummed her fingers on the kitchen countertop, eyeing the rest of the guests with a stern glare unlike her usual demeanor. Despite the tension, she still kept her words calm and soft, laying out her story slowly.

"I looked into a certain room last night, " The lady said. " I managed to find some items before a certain someone sneaked up to me. Unfortunately everything was happening too fast, so I couldn't catch much of the assailant's features... but I saw the item he or she tried to put in my purse. A Blowtorch. Slightly used, from what I can tell. It must have been the weapon used in Miss Featherbottom's... incident. "

"Building onto the list Mr McEth has so graciously compiled for us, we now know that :

  • Mr Valentino has AVG Intelligence.
  • Miss Noir has AVG Intelligence.
  • BG Bleckingham has AVG Dexerity.
  • Painelope has AVG Dexerity.
  • Nikita has AVG Dexerity / AVG Intelligence.
  • Mr Grumpypants has ABV AVG Strength.
  • Mr Octavius has AVG Dexerity.

Mr Buckfum, Mr Orad and Mr McEth are still unaccounted for, sadly. It looks like only people with average to above average Dexterity can wield the Blowtorch, too."

"Of course, I think it's too early to cast our verdicts..." Despite her words, she still found herself casting a slightly suspicious glance at General Bleckingham, but Noir pressed on nonetheless. "It'd be helpful if we managed to find out and share more of what other strengths and weaknesses we all have. More importantly, I'd like to know where all of you were last night, too."

"AHCHOO!"

McEth stared at the mucus flowing down his left palm with no small amount of disbelief. Fumbling into his suit pocket, he quipped, "A fortuitous turn of events! Pray tell, in which room did this happen? Did you find anything else? I myself spent the night combing the Garden for hints regarding Miss Featherbottom's murder. I didn't find any; instead, this blasted cold found me."

He inhaled with a loud, wet sound before continuing, "However, I can confirm the existence of the following items in the vicinity:

3/6 Items

Baseball Bat

Hedge Trimmers

Shovel"

"Mr Valentino, Mr Octavius and Mr Orad will be able to attest to my character today as I have had the opportunity to converse with those three gentlemen in the past 2 days. Incidentally, I should like to inform everyone that Mr Octavius is no dimwit; he has ABV AVG Intelligenc-CHOO!" He punctuated the sentence with an impossibly loud sneeze.

OOC: Well, if we can trust Noir, then the Murderer has at least 2 items on him/her right now. Due to the risk involved (as exemplified by Miss Noir's testimony), I don't think M would have tried to ditch the weapon unless he was running out of inventory space.

"I bring you an update of what we know, or have at least, been told, by those in our group." Mr. Valentino took a drag on his cigar, pausing for a moment in thought. Much had happened, but nobody was dead tonight. "I wonder if there was no kill because the kill itself would have, at the moment, pointed immediate suspicion towards them..." He paused again, taking another puff of his cigar and brushing at his white lapels, "Hrmm..." He tweaked his short, styled moustache, "I found out, as well, after conversing with Mr. Buckfum the previous night, that while he may be a second rate porn producer, his intellect is first rate. I can confirm that he has above average intelligence."

"I am unsure of this game's proceedings as I have been rather busy, tweaking my moustache and smoking my cigar the past few days, but even so, if my theory on the use of the alcohol and matches are still relevant, then I would suspect either Miss Noir or Mr. Buckfum at this point. However, I cannot be sure of this, as I have struggled to follow the game this time. I have investigated the Janitor's Room and found the items mentioned above. More important than the items themselves, was the fact that DD said there was only 3/5 items in the list I was given, so not all rooms have 6 items as i'd thought. If anyone knows of these rooms having less items, come forwards."

Mr. Valentino took a long drag of his cigar and let the smoke fall from his lips as he spoke, "But, as always, I will add all information given to the list, but will keep in mind the questionable nature of that information - as the murderer could claim there were less items in a room than there was, so as to make us think there was no murder weapon in that room."

"No, Mr Valentino. Our search of the Lounge yesterday, -after- the murder of Miss Featherbottoms, did not reveal any signs that either the Alcohol or the Matches has been touched by the Murderer. Unless there's a third item capable to burning a human to death, I'm inclined to believe that the Blowtorch is the murder weapon."

Pause as McEth retrieved his handkerchief and pressed it to his nose. No sneeze came. What McEth said next was muffled by the fabric covering the lower half of his face.

"Also, the only one to claim that a room has less items than it should so far is you, Mr Valentino. So I'm not sure what you mean when you say that the murderer may claim there to be less items in the room to mislead us.* Do you mean to say you just acted like how a murderer might?!"

"Miss Noir,  will you tell us the room you were in last night where the brush-in with M happened and its contents? It might be vital to proving your innocence."

OOC:

I think DayDreamer made it pretty clear the rooms all had 6 items in the beginning.

"Yes each search of a room yields 3 random items of the 6 total, so there's no guarantee that if you search the same room twice, you won't find just the same 3 items, or at least some of the same."

I'm pretty sure a quick reply from everyone will collaborate that all their rooms were x/6 and not x/5 in their searches yesterday.

DayDreamer, can the murderer both leave 1 item in the room he/she investigates -and- plant another 1 item on someone who happened to be searching that room too?

"What I was saying, Mr. McEth, was that having realised that there are smaller rooms than the six-item rooms, that we should be wary of further mentions of smaller rooms, despite now being aware of it. Because a murderer could imply that there were less items in the room than there really is. It's just something that needs confirming, you understand." Mr. Valentino tapped the ash from the end of his cigar and straightened his hat before continuing, "For example, you could investigate the Janitor's Room, to see if i'm telling the truth, but equally, the murderer could place an item there or on my person in an attempt to frame me. I am just trying to prepare us for as many possibilities that the murderer might choose, so that if I get murdered, then I have at least, passed on a degree of my knowledge/observations."

McEth furrowed his eyebrows.

"Mr Valentino, what you've raised is strange because, firstly, it requires us to assume that there were 5-item rooms originally when we have no reason to do so. Secondly, it also conveniently allows you to explain away why you might have an item on you if we searched you after tonight."

The next part was an attempt to Converse with Mr Valentino, but was spoken loud enough for everyone to hear.

"To preclude that possibility, based on both Miss Noir and your own testimony, I'm going to vote that we Search you -today-. To support my case against you, I'll point out that you seemed to deliberately ignore the Blowtorch that was produced by Miss Noir and fixate on your Alcohol-and-Matches theory. And that's even though we're certain that they couldn't have been taken and replaced by the murderer prior to our collective search of the Lounge."

"In case anyone has any doubts, we must exercise our Search option today because, by this time tomorrow, the murderer may have dumped his remaining item(s) elsewhere or have planted it on someone else, successfully this time. After today, even if we searched and found an item on someone, we cannot conclusively prove that that person didn't have it planted on him/her. But today, we know that the murderer had tried and failed to plant an item on Miss Noir."

"Unless Mr Valentino was lying (and why would he unless he was the murderer?), the murderer must have investigated the Janitor's Room in the first night, taken the Blowtorch from there, and then killed Miss Featherbottoms (bless her soul) in the Gardens. My own search of the Garden last night, before the murderer could have replaced any items he might have used from there, revealed that there were still 6 items there. Admittedly, the murder weapon may have been from the Garden and left there after the murder, but that's unlikely because the murderer wouldn't have left it there to be potentially discovered."

"In any case, the murderer had 2 items on his person after the murder on the first night - the murder weapon and his own personal item from the start. On the second night, he tried to plant one of his items on Miss Noir. This is evidenced by the Blowtorch Miss Noir has produced. Unless the murderer can both leave 1 item in the room he investigates AND plant another 1 item on someone in the same night*, he has 1 item on his person right now. So a Search can yield a positive match on the murderer."

"In my deductions, I assume that everyone, including the murderer, is telling the truth. Because of the risk associated with being caught lying, the murderer will not lie unless absolutely forced to. Therefore, he/she had no reason to lie about where he/she investigated the first night, prior to the crime. Another reason why we should search Mr Valentino today is that if he proves to be innocent, i.e. no items on his person, we can immediately suspect that Miss Noir is in fact the murderer and is pulling an elaborate ruse by revealing the murder weapon she has just used. Why? Because Miss Noir was the one who told us the contents of the Janitor's Room the first night! Plus, at that point, we can use Mr Valentino's confirmation of the Broom in the Janitor's Room the second night to say that, yes, Miss Noir was there the first night."

"You guys talk too much, it's annoying. Anyway, I also went to the Garden and found Hedge Trimmers, Rock and Lawn Mower. Also that weirdo Octavius has Above Average Intelligence, apparently. I think the GM either made a mistake or this Octavius cheated on the IQ test."

I'm not sure if I made it clear before, but while all rooms have 6 items total, the total will decrease if items are removed from it. If you find a room has only 5 items, that also means any items found there in past may not still be there, as any of them may have been the one taken.

And no, a planting attempt, if it fails, skips the rest of the murderers actions, as they have to lay low for the night.

"I think i've just had my point indirectly supported there." Mr. Valentino turned to face the group as a whole, stroking his moustache with his free hand, "The fact that there was found to be 5 items which *I* was the one to bring up, supports the fact that I was telling the truth and an item was removed from that room. Why would I publicly alert everyone to the fact that this was the case? If I was the murderer, I might not have lied, but I would have thought that I would say nothing instead." Mr. Valentino turned his attention towards Mr. McEth, "Secondly, you jumped on me like I was your go-to guy - i'm surprised at how suddenly you pointed suspicion at me, when i've done nothing but help. I have to ask what makes you think that having an item on me makes me guilty? As has been said, it can be easily placed on me. If anything, you have effectively doomed me, because the murderer could easily plant something on me (if i'm not immune) and then boom, i'm the guilty one suddenly."

Mr. Valentino shook his head, "The fact that you use the argument that having an item on my person that was used as a murder weapon, makes me guilty, seems very flimsy indeed. Right now, I have nothing on my person (to my knowledge), but tomorrow I could well have, either by you, or whoever might be the murderer, as they would see it as an opportunity to appoint blame on me."

"Why would there be a blowtorch, of all items, in a Janitor's Room? " Noir disagreed, waving the theory away. "In fact, I think it'd fit better in a Garden setting, won't you think? On top of the three items Mr McEth discovered himself, Mr Grumpypants also brought up the existence of a Rock and Lawnmower. That brings the total amount of items in the Garden up to a five, too. Something is still missing. ...A blowtorch, perhaps?

I propose we meet up in either the Garden or the Janitor's Room tomorrow, in that case. "

"If I'm not mistaken, we can only use the Search ability just once* throughout this entire twisted 'game', too. We should confirm Mr Valentino actually has the ability to wield a Blowtorch before actually using our one chance on him. It'd be a terrible waste, otherwise."

"Lastly. I do agree with Mr Valentino that you've been one of the most...pro-active participant thus far," She paused. "But I'm sure we'd all want to know more about you before spinning any more theories about who the murderer is. (Converse with Mr McEth)"

*OOC: Checked with Day, it's indeed once per game.

"Yes, that's precisely my point! If we don't investigate someone today, the Search option becomes virtually useless. We have a small window of opportunity now to utilize the Search while it can still serve a purpose. Otherwise, the murderer will get another chance tonight to plant the item on someone else or even leave it in the room."

McEth continued excitedly, "And why you, Mr Valentino? Besides the observations I've made before, the evidence you've brought to light directly points to Miss Noir being guilty. It's simply too perfect; the only room with x/5 happens to be the one where Miss Noir was in? In my mind now, there are two scenarios. A, you are the murderer. Having tried and failed to plant the Blowtorch on Miss Noir, you stated that the room which Miss Noir had been in the first night is now missing an item. This item is presumably the Blowtorch which she had just produced. I was the one that made the connection between the x/5, the Janitor's Room and that Miss Noir was there the first night, but anyone who kept track could have made this link as well once you mentioned it."

A hint of moisture appeared at McEth's nostrils.

"Searching you will either prove your guilt or your innocence. If you're innocent, then scenario B is true. Miss Noir is the murderer and, wanting to throw off suspicion from herself, produced one of the two items in her inventory while claiming that it was planted on her. However, you happened to have investigated the Janitor's Room where she had investigated the night before and found out that something had been taken from it. TADAH! She's guilty."

"Could I be the murderer and set up this elaborate ruse between you and Miss Noir? Nay, because I was in the Bathroom the first night and Miss Nikita confirmed the items I had mentioned. As I've previously mentioned, if what you say is true, then it's highly likely the murderer visited only the Janitor's Room and the Garden in the first night."

OOC: My message from DayDreamer regarding the Garden said 3/6. If something had been taken from it, DayDreamer would have said 3/5.

"I am unsure what making a search of a person is required as being useless after tonight, I think it can be useful at any point during the game," Mr. Valentino frowned at Mr. McEth, "Besides, your logic of 'it must be you or Miss Noir' isn't holding up for me. I may know of my innocence, but be unable to prove it, but I have no proof of anyone being the murderer other than an individual unnecessarily targeting me in order to waste some of our best moves, like searching a person's inventory. If the group wants to search my inventory, i'm all for it. If the group wants to meet up in the Garden or the Janitor's Room, I am also fine with this, my vote can be considered whatever the group believes is in our best interests because to be frank, I don't care."

Mr. Valentino took a short puff of his cigar, "I have been in too many games to know that defending my actions like this only makes me appear guilty, and silence equally so, so instead I will just let the group do whatever they want, and it will either prove my innocence or get me killed. But there are only two options in my mind, either your logic is flawed and you are pointing it in my direction through a mistake in your assumptions, or you are deliberately targeting myself or Miss Noir because you want to plant the seeds of doubt and then later have us waste our only chance to identify the murderer, and thus win you the game. To be frank, I have no idea if you are the murderer or not, I can't decide on anyone this game. But you certainly make for an interesting possibility, given your attitude towards me this game." Mr. Valentino went to put the cigar in his mouth and realised it was barely a snub, so he threw it to the floor, crushed it underfoot and promptly cut, and lit, a new cigar. "We will see..."

"And I'm saying it's too risky to use our precious chance when we aren't even half sure it's any of us. I'd have laid low and waited this out if some wisecracker within us didn't just attempt to plant the gosh darn evidence on me." Noir grimaced at Mr McEth, and rattled the Blowtorch on the counter. "It sounds like you're just attempting to draw attention away from the Garden, in any case. The Murderer could have just stumbled on the Blowtorch in the Garden, and Ms Featherbottom just happened to be there. There is simply no need to draw the Janitor's Room into this.

"The room is only missing an item because I took the bottle of ammonium with me for safe keeping. Who knows what the murderer would have done if it chanced on such a dangerous item...However. That brings me to my next point. I couldn't have taken the blowtorch if I already grabbed that bottle of ammonium. That's the rule of the game. One item per game. A search will immediately prove that I'm telling the truth, if you're that insistent on squandering our privileges."

"Of course, there's another possibility." She lazily waved the information sheet, pointing out a certain paragraph printed on it. "The Murderer may start with a personal item. Which may just throw all our theories out of the water."

"Those four sentences, coupled with your admission that you have a second item in your inventory, proves your guilt. Nowhere in the Guidelines was it mentioned that Innocents could remove items from the rooms; only the murderer was told in the Guidelines he/she could do so."

"Even if we accept that you had the brilliant idea of removing an item from the Janitor's Room, you were the only one who came up with the idea of doing so? And why mention only now that you took it? In his previous incarnation as a Sith, Mr Valentino did exactly that; tell everyone that he is for the good side and conveniently "forgot" to mention that there was something more until much later when it benefited him to do so. I believe it is reasonable to assume that an Innocent would have informed us of any changes he/she made to the room and not wait on that information.

And it just so happened that you took the bottle of Ammonium from the Janitor's Room, got targeted by the murderer to be planted with the Blowtorch, and had the ability to notice when that happened? The odds of all that happening together are… unlikely, to say the least."

"I had stated all along that the murderer started with a personal item, and got 1 from the Janitor's Room. In this case, you started out with either the Ammonium or the Blowtorch, and took the other from the Janitor's Room."

"Also, you still haven't told us where you were last night and what you found. We need that information to know why, if you are the murderer, didn't you kill someone last night. That's the only thing that might give you a chance.*"

EDIT: Never mind. You had to refrain from killing anyone in order to play the tried-to-plant-on-me-but-failed ruse.

"Hmm. In my previous game, as the Sith, I did attempt to fool everyone (to great success for a time) that I was innocent, by choking myself. So, nobody died last night, and now Miss Noir claims she had evidence planted on her. This could simply be the truth, or it could be a nod towards a tactic I recently employed. I would also say that there are things you have said that fall short, Mr. McEth." Mr. Valentino paused and thought for a moment, "For example, saying that a person can't have more than one item is wrong, if they picked up an item, and one was planted on them, this seems possible. Also, I am certain that an innocent taking an item from a room was allowed, and so I must assume, yet again, that you are either making another incorrect assumption, or you are trying to frame Miss Noir, I am still unsure, but to backup my point, I will share something we all know as fact." Mr. Valentino cleared his throat and read the following note with his cigar clenched in the corner of his mouth.

  • Investigate a room. This will reveal some of the room's Inventory, you may take an item if you wish, but only once per game. Investigating a room leaves you vulnerable to being murdered in that room.

  • Investigate a room. This will reveal some of the room's Inventory, you may take an item if you wish, but only once per game. Investigating a room leaves you vulnerable to being murdered in that room.

"Okay, that's a valid point. I made a big mistake there! Innocents can pick up an item. Anything else? What about the part about not telling us then? You've decreased the strength of my argument. However, she went into the Janitor's Room, took an item from there, decided not to tell us (even when telling us about the Blowtorch), and coincidentally had the Blowtorch planted on her?"

"Also, I didn't say that a person can't have more than one item on him/her. Except that even having one at this point leaves one open to the question of 'why did you take it and not tell us?'"

"There is one decisive way to prove that my theory is mistaken. If someone (other than Miss Noir) finds another x/5 room from his/her search last night or tonight, then we can safely assume that the Blowtorch came from that room and was planted on Miss Noir. We'll have to see what the rest turns up and coordinate our search to cover as many rooms as possible tonight before the murderer can ditch the item there."

"I deemed it rather unwise to immediately lay all my cards on the table, though that may have derailed and caused me some slight trouble. If that's the case..." Resigning, she recounted her findings last night. "I went to the Billiards Room. Deer Antlers, a Hunting Rifle, and some Darts were found. That was where the murderer struck. I'm surprised I...lucked out in such a way too, believe me."

Noir let out a dry chuckle, but her dark eyes remained steely. "We'd need more time if we want to find the truth. Maybe the new findings from the rest of us might help push this along a little more..."
