Background

 

Jagers are strange creatures. They travel around world to do the most dangerous job in the world and for that they get paid more than anyone else. Sadly, most of them don’t live long enough to enjoy all the money they make and the other half is too busy constantly travelling to take a pause and enjoy all the money that they make, yet I’ve rarely seen a Jager who regretted this decision.

 

Sometimes it made me wonder whether a ‘normal’ human could ever make it as a Jager. You see, I think you have to be cut from a certain cloth. Have to be born and raised in a certain way. You need a certain set of morals and a certain level of foolish bravery. I think that you need to be a special kind of monster in order to properly hunt for real monsters.

 

Setting

 

Hello amici.

 

Today I bring you a dark action fantasy, set in a fictional world similar to Medieval Europe; Vaalbara.

 

Vaalbara is divided in 4 continents, each with their own kingdoms, but none of that is very important right now. I don’t want to build the entire world, so I’ll leave that as a collaborative effort (yeah, I know, normally I am really control-freak-y about it). The important parts are the Jagers and the Colossi.

 

Colossi are gigantic creatures of various shapes and sizes, ranging from 40 to 80 meters tall and varying width. Even though the Colossi can be a large range of various types of monstrosities, the term Colossi is used as a catch-all for any of the huge magical creatures that terrorize Vaalbara.

 

Colossi tend to appear out of nowhere; they randomly descend from the skies, crawl out of oceans, carve their way out of mountains and there have even been reports of Colossi suddenly appearing out of thin air! Either way, no one knows where they are coming from or why they are appearing. All they know is that these Colossi are relentless in their destruction of anything in their path.

 

On average, each region has a Colossi attack every two weeks.

Jagers, Dutch for Hunters, are humans who have dedicated their lives to hunting these Colossi. They do so for various reasons; fame, wealth, power. It doesn’t really matter. However, due to the huge size of the Colossi it is virtually impossible to kill one in a one on one fight. Because of this humans band together in group of 12 or more members in order to take down the Colossi.

 

But numbers isn’t enough to take down a creature 20 to 40 times their size. Sadly, ‘normal’ magic does not exist in this world. Humans are naturally powerless and they would not stand a chance against the Colossi, if it weren’t for the magical properties of a Colossi’s body.

 

The body of a Colossus is one of the greatest mysteries of Vaalbara and the main reason why many Jagers get rich real fast. Drinking the blood of a Colossus temporarily increases one’s physical capabilities, eating the heart of a Colossus cures any known ailment, eating the brain of a Colossus grants you a prophetic dream of one’s own death, but even more important than any of that are the Keys.

A Key is an item that was crafted by a specialised smith using parts of a Colossi’s body (flesh, bones, organs, teeth, etc.). When a smith, who knows what he’s doing, crafts the Key it will retain certain magical properties that belonged to the Colossus. A sword created using a dragon’s body would posses fire powers, for example.

 

This story will follow a group of Jagers, known as The Lion’s Pride, as they adventure and prepare for the once in a century event: the Wild Hunt. An event wherein hundreds upon hundreds of Colossi suddenly appear and go on a rampage for a week, before they disappear again.

 

Terminology

 

Vaalbara - The world the RP is set in.

 

Jager - Person who dedicates his life to hunting Colossi.

 

Colossi/Colossus - Gigantic monstrosities that randomly appear to terrorize everything on their path.

 

Keys - Items, crafted from the bodies of the Colossi, imbued with magical powers.

Name: Orson LeChevalier

Age: 24

Personality: Orson may seem aloof at times. He doesn not care much about humans, but he adores the Colossi. He thinks they are the most fascinating things in the world and he would love to spend his entire life studying them. Even though he became a Jager to follow his father's legacy, he did not do so out of hatred of the creatures, but out of love. Hunting them was the only way for him to adequately study the Colossi.
Despite his normal cool exterior, he is easily excited by the presence of a Colossus and can get very loud and obnoxious when excited. Orson is very intelligent, knowledgeable about the Colossi's mythology and observant.

Keys: Magmortis - A two-handed greatsword crafted from the body of Maggrala, a gigantic worm who moved freely through the planet’s magma before crawling out through a volcano. The blade was crafted using a few of the thousands of teeth Maggrala had and it was forged in the blood of Maggrala, which had a temperature higher than any human forge could match (making it unsuitable for drinking!).
The ordinarily black blade and be activated at will. When that happens the blood of Maggrale flows freely through it, heating it up, turning it read and making it as hot as magma. The blade does not radiate any heat, but anything that touches it will burn instantaneously.

Razortooth - A pair of swords created from the tusks of a large sabertooth tiger-like creature; Razormaw. Razormaw was only 15 tall, but it’s body was nearly 30 meters long. It’s speed and ferocity made up for its short stature.
The Razerteeth are extremely light, durable and capable of cutting through any non-magical material, even diamonds, without the use of any extra effect (like molecular manipulation). The Razerteeth are able to conjure gusts of wind of various strength, which can even be used by the wielder to soar.

The Bastion - A set of armor crafted from the hide and bones of the Behemoth, a gigantic quadruped beast who's skin was so thick that it took several groups of Jagers several weeks of combat in order to finally pierce through it.

The Bastion is lighter and more durable than any type of armor made through normal materials, offering the user protection against various forms of attacks common to the Colossi. Despite it's strength, to the user it feels like they are wearing clothes made out of silk, and despite it's lightness no weapon made of ordinary steel can pierce it. The ability granted by the Bastion is a form of magnetism. If a Colossus bleeds within a mile of the Bastion, the user can active the power in the gloves and the Bastion will pull itself in the direction of the blood. Effectively giving the wielder a means of sticking to a Colossus.

 

Background: Until two generations ago, the LeChevallier family was just an ordinary farmer's family, but then Orson's grandfather decided that his true calling was that of a Jager. Orson's grandfather died at the age of 30, but not before fathering a child and having the Bastion crafted. Orson's father would later follow in his father's footsteps as a Jager and build the Razerteeth, but he also died long before his prime.

When Orson grew up he learned that both his grandfather and father knew when they would die, thanks to having eaten the brain of a Colossi, yet they still ventured on, fearless, knowing that this was their true calling. Orson's fascination with Colossi and his respect for his father and grandfather made him decide to follow in their footsteps. Using the Keys they had fought for, he managed to be part of the group that slew the Maggrala and crafted his own Key: the Magmortis.

A while later he would meet up with a man who used to be a hunting buddy of his father; Jordan McLeod. Jordan was the leader of the Lion's Pride, a group of 20 Jagers who had enjoyed great success in their hunts. Jordan wouldn't invite just anyone in to the group, to ensure that the group's overall strength remained high, but knowing what Orson had already accomplished at his age meant that Jordan quickly offered Orson to join his Pride.

Name: Fujioka Ai
Age: 15
Personality:
Ai is normally quiet and reserved, preferring to sit by herself on a rock and gaze into the distance instead of communicating with the rest of her teammates. Although she rarely speaks, Ai is not shy by nature. She simply finds it more peaceful to sit by herself than to talk unnecessarily with others. Ai has an unhealthy obsession with Colossi, and will usually be the first one charging out to meet one in battle as soon as they are sighted. Due to her childhood, she is naturally gifted at battling Colossi, and her greatest strength is the ability to adapt to her opponent in order to out-maneuver and overwhelm them before they can react.
Appearance: I couldn't find a proper picture.
Keys: Tenryuuzashi - A silver-edged blade that was crafted from the steel-hard feathers of the Tenshi, which was a humanoid Colossus who terrorized the skies and rained lightning on any who dared to approach it. The wielder of the Tenryuuzashi gains the ability to move through the air like it was solid ground, and can draw upon the power of the thunderstorm to electrify all opponents. When activated, the Tenryuuzashi grants its wielder the divine ability to cut through space itself.
Calahindr - An obsidian shield made from the carapace of the Caladbolg, an enormous worm-shaped Colossus who once froze the time of an entire city for three months in order to drain the life force of everyone within. This shield stops any attack in its tracks from a single direction, freezing it in time and draining its energy simultaneously. The stored energy can be released in the form of a raw burst of power that emanates outwards from the shield.
 
Background: "I think that you need to be a special kind of monster in order to properly hunt for real monsters." Ai was first found by a bunch of travelling traders as she sat in the middle of a corpse of a dead Colossus, humming a soft tune to herself as she cleaned the edge of her blade with her dress. The bodies of her dead countrymen lay strewn all around her, but the 10-year-old girl didn't seem perturbed by the gory scene at all. After she was taken back to civilization, it was discovered that her blade, which she claimed had been given to her since she was a child, was in fact a Key, the Tenryuuzashi. They tried to help her to integrate with her new environment, but Ai always seemed distant, often wandering to "The Outskirts" in order to hunt smaller Colossi as though they were her prey. Her talents as a Jager were soon recognized, and she was recommended onto the team known as The Lion's Pride soon after.

Personality: Quiet and peaceful, he has a kind heart and looks out for others above himself.

Keys: Raidakaze: A pair of geta made from the facial mask of the Wind Conjuring Colossi Karasu-Tengu, a humanoid colossi that blew massive gusts with its great arms. The bearer of these enchanted geta gain an extreme boost in dexterity and are able to leap amongst the clouds. It does not give flight and cannot use the cloud-jumping ability in clear skies. The dexterity given allows for any who wear them a blinding speed in fighting and movement, as well as heightened senses.

 

Irezumi-no-Kyojin: Unlike most keys, this is a special blend of magically infused ink and the blood of a colossi known as the Waru-no-Kami. A fierce creature that has yet to actually be killed. Its blood was taken from a wound it was given and used to create the ink that gives this key its power. The end result is a shape shifting tattoo that grants a slightly different power depending on what its form is. Known forms include: Dragon - Gains firebreathing; Lion - Gains a great deal of increased strength; Tiger - Gains a small increase to strength but also gives greater agility; Crab - Hardens the skin and makes the body hard as steel; Unicorn - Allows very brief foresight that allows for in the moment changes to attacks; Spider - Allows the ability to walk upon walls with ease; Scorpion - Physical attacks that involve skin contact contract a poison that hardens the muscles of the receiver; Phoenix - The wielder's body begins to immolate causing no harm to the bearer, but burns others; Water - The wielder's body flows and bend as water does, allowing him to become water and fit through tight spots or strike a difficult to hold down foe; Goddess - The rarest tattoo only seen once, it grants the bearer an extremely short window of immortality from any wound it may receive.

 

Background: As a kid, Ken was always raised to believe that the Colossi were evil despicable things to be killed and used for everyone's advantage. However, at a young age he met a wise old man who told a tale of how the Colossi used to be revered by the people of old amongst his clan. Learning this he began showing respect for his enemy, allowing for it to feel much less personal and more honorable to be allowed to challenge the 'Gods of Old' as the man said to him. With respect for his enemy, he let the hate he was trained to feel from birth leave him, allowing his mind to remain clear.

 

He was good at every martial art he trained in and became a master at his dojo at the age of 16. This didn't last long, as he went on a pilgrimage to hone his senses and create his own style which he now teaches to those willing to learn. The Shirotora style became a force to be reckoned with and he is now known as the White Tiger of the Lion's Pride. His mastery of martial arts allows him to use powerful strikes from a distance, punching the air and making it carry the power of his punches.

Age: Secret

Personality: Pro-active, focused. Dedicated her life to researching / hunting the Colossi, and knows little about life outside of combat.

 


APPEARANCE, WORD VERSION: 

  • Thin, loose braids that hangs just a little below her chest
  • One green eye left on face
  • Jingly jangly headpiece
  • Classic floaty mage attire
 

Keys

Eye of Shu - A single eye she plucked out of a frost monster who mauled half her face off. It now sits proudly in her left eye socket. Ice has begun forming and settling into the scars left by her injuries, giving half her face a glassy, almost inhuman looking vibe. Eye retains the ability to change the surroundings of the bearer, giving [NAME OF CHARACTER] the power to call down a blizzard at will. 

 

Zephyrus - If the hail and frostbite weren't enough to grant her a decisive victory, [NAME OF CHARACTER] is also in possession of an unholy looking lance, pieced together from all the bits and pieces of bone her saviors scrapped from the champ who took her eye. Freezes anything it touches... including flesh and blood. Of course.

 

Background: Revenge is a dish best served cold! [NAME OF CHARACTER] has developed a vendetta against ice elementals since a freak encounter almost snuffed her life out right there and then. The team who eventually slew the monster gave her it's eye and remains in an attempt to make up for her disfigurement, sparking off a friendship between the young girl and the jagers. The rest was history.

Age: 26
 

Personality: 

Akir is a rather excited guy, the only he cares more about than killing colossi are keeping his friends alive, he likes to face his problems face-on and rush into whatever needs doing. He isn't the most tactical of the team, nor one of the strongest, yet cares nothing about it, he'd rather stab a thousands times for a bit of damage than one time for big damage.

 

Appearance:

Despite his rather prominent cloak, Akir likes to keep his clothes to the basic earth colours of brown, green and sometimes a dark red. He will never win a beauty contest, he wasn't born pretty and getting his nose broken three times, two teeth knocked out and the left side of his head scarred horribly by fire -leaving only a small piece of skin where his ear once was- have destroyed any chance he had. The hair that's left is curly and red and his eyes a light blue. His build is rather burly, yet due to the cloak he can deliver little of the strength that he is supposed to have. 

 

Keys: 
Pilosus Pugiones
A dark brown pair of daggers, created from Aragnasi, a giant spider like colossus. The main part of the dagger is created out of the bone of one of the legs of Aragnasi, however a thin layer of skin of the beast has been fused to the blade, giving a dark brown colour and a fuzzy, somewhat hairy feel. Due to these hairs on the outside the daggers will stick to any surface the wielder wants it to, so far no amount of force has been able to separate the dagger from whatever it stuck to without Akir releasing it out of will.
 
Lepis Pallium
A cloak which reflects the sun greatly, causing a thousand glitters and a billion different hues to cover the cloak with every moment. It's a ever changing array of colours with never one being the dominant colour. It was taken from the wing of Volare Pulcher, a gigantic six winged butterfly-like beast. The cloak can only be pierced by an exact 90 degrees attack, any other angle of attack will be deflected. That's however a secondary to the fact that it decreases the weight of it's wearer by 95%, meaning that while wearing it Akir weights a rough 5 kilograms. This allows him to be thrown around rather easily yet it also increases his ability to move and jump (further increased by the Cruris Altus), the cloak also decreases G-forces on the body of the wearer, Akir can -and has- fallen from the top of colossus with only a broken leg as a result, the same effect has been observed when the wearer is thrown against a wall. The cloak will not stop the damage of a blunt weapon though. 
 
Cruris Altus
Akir has no idea where these black greaves come from, he found them on a dead Jager whose face got smashed in beyond recognition, they allow a human to jump much higher and further than normally, an effect further increased by his Lepis Pallium, although he isn't able to jump clear over a colossus, even when it's a lower one, but it'll give him a good boost.

Background: 

After getting separated from his parents in the confusion of a colossus attack, at the age of nineteen he roamed the streets for a little while, stealing, pick pocketing and doing small time jobs to survive. During this time he met one of the few retired Jagers, a man maybe ten years older than him, who told him all about being a Jager and taught him how to fight with an array of weapons, after only two years of training the man said he had nothing left to teach.

 

Akir set out to search of a group of Jagers, to further his education and to gain some keys to rightfully call his. He find a group of twenty-two and hunted with them for a few years, gaining both his cloak and daggers, before he got badly injured in a fight against a fire breathing colossus, which broke two ribs, his left leg and arm and scorched the left side of his head. Besides his injuries the beast managed to kill five of his group, which was already dwindled at that time.

 

As he was recovering another colossus attacked, an incredibly strong beast which killed all but two members of his group, paralyzing one surviving member and amputating the arm of the other. It was in the aftermath of that battle that he found his greaves, his other two friends decided to retire from their Jager-work and left Akir to search for a new group, after hearing that Lion's pride was visiting a nearby town he presented himself, barely healed, to Jordan.

I actually finished writing the OP, 'cause that's how excited I am. I'll post it once everyone is done with their characters~

 

And Alisyn practically begged me to let her join. And I can't really so no to her, so that was very unfair of her! But yeah. She's in.

 

Also I wonder who will be the first person I need to murder for posting too ultra slow >__>

Name: Grainne Ciardha
Age: 23

Personality:
Grainne is often silent and introspective, revealing little about herself. She prefers to listen rather than speak, gleaning knowledge to add to her hoard, and will usually pause to assess a situation before diving in. However, she is steadfast to the point of stubbornness, and it takes much to change her mind once it's been made up. She tends to bottle up her frustration, which results in spectacular explosions of temper when it gets to be too much.

Appearance:
Despite her willowy build, Grainne can easily hold her own in battle, using strategy and subtlety over brute strength. Her long, fiery-red hair is often pulled back in a braid, which is then curled and pinned on top of her head. Her eyes are a deep, forest-green, and look older than her years. Beneath Preachancloca, she often wears gowns in shades of green or brown, loose enough to move easily without tripping her up.

Keys:
Preachancloca: A cloak of pure black feathers from an immense raven, this Key allows Grainne to melt into any shadow, using it to move anywhere within the bounds of the darkness--including into contiguous shadows. She can materialize herself to any extent that she wills from the shadows, from an eye to her entire being. While concealed in shadow, she cannot be harmed by ordinary means. She is also generally aware of the shadow's surroundings while immersed in it, but she doesn't know the details of what is specifically happening unless she materializes a part of herself to observe her surroundings.

Crannclaiomh: A short sword crafted from the heartwood of a living tree, the dense, hard wood has not yet lost its edge, even decades after its crafting. As it drinks in the blood of Grainne's foes, its strength increases, growing sharper and sprouting more branches to tear the Colossus open as the blade is withdrawn. When it has consumed all the blood available, it returns to its original, dormant form. It is also capable of "seeding" its victim, laying down a new sprout that will spread its roots through the creature to immobilize it and eventually kill it as the new plant absorbs the life energy to make it its own. If the victim does not prove to be a suitable host, the weapon will instead begin to secrete poisonous chemical compounds.

Background:
Grainne comes from a family of Jagers, in which the eldest child is expected to follow in the footsteps of their ancestors. The eldest takes the surname Ciardha and is trained in the use of the short sword, as he or she will inherit the family heirloom Crannclaiomh upon the death of the predecessor, but they are not recognized as a true successor until they take down their first Colossus with it and have a new Key crafted.

The Ciardhas believe that their work is to restore the balance of nature that the Colossi disrupt with their existence. Grainne herself holds this tenet close to her heart, choosing as her first mission to hunt an enormous raven that was wreaking havoc on the crops and placing the population in danger of starvation. Even so, she is still relatively inexperienced for a Jager, having only recently come into her birthright.
