The Scars of Magic

84 posts in this topic

For a thousand years, the Bariura Empire has asserted its dominance over the realm of Alysia, a world both blessed and cursed with powerful magics. Prior to the rise of the Empire, wild and untamed magic flowed through the realm, causing catastrophes and wars that shaped the realm. Free magic, as the common folk call it, was freely available to anyone who had a natural aptitude for controlling magic. It was pure magic, born when the world was first created and thus, was blessed with unlimited potential. From simply creating small miracles to manipulating the fabric of space-time, the only limit to its power was the user’s imagination. Unfortunately, such magic was not be tamed by men, and those who seeked to control it were slowly corrupted by its essence, becoming creatures born of magic, mindless monsters who wish to devour all for more power. Wars were waged over it, which lead to an event called the Orion War, which devastated the continent and leveled the grand city of Ampador, the capital of the realm at that time. Out of the ashes of the destroyed kingdom came the survivors, who were shaken and fully realized the destructive potential of free magic. Swearing to never let this power go unchecked again, the Bariura Empire was born, and with it, Charter magic, the opposite of free magic. Charter magic was magic created by men, with order, rules and laws at its very core, unlike free magic, where chaos, imagination and emotions flowed freely. Quickly building up their empire, they asserted their dominance over the land, seeking out free magic wherever it existed and destroying it. Thousands of years have passed, and now a group of nations called the Alvia Alliance wish to challenge the empire and allow the use of free magic by the very people it belongs to: Everyone.

FACTIONS:

Bariura Empire

“A thousand years ago, our forefathers witnessed firsthand the destructive power of Free magic. They saw how it scarred the land, massacred thousands and drove millions into lunacy. For the sake of the realm, they swore to never let such a catastrophe happen. Now, it is up to us to uphold this promise and stop Free magic wherever and whenever it appears, to make sure such a dark chapter in history never rewrites itself. For the Empress! For Bariura!â€

The dominant superpower of Alysia, ruled over by the young Empress Saria Auriasta. Formed by the remnants of those who survived the Orion War, the main objective of the empire is to stop Free magic wherever it appears, be it a child born with witch-like powers, or a realm corrupted by a spring of Free magic. They will not stop at any means to wipe Free magic out, whether it’ll be sentencing a suspected individual to death, or burning an entire village to the ground. As the creators of Charter magic, only sanctioned mages and officials being allowed to use it. They are strict and unmerciful in their actions, which have caused some states to decide to rebel.

Alvia Alliance

“Free magic was a gift given by the gods to the people of the land. All should be allowed to use it freely, but the Bariura Empire, these power-crazed dogs, they seek to take away this gift from all! Not only that, they install their own magic system, and make it so that only they can use it while we, the common folk, are oppressed and killed for “witchcraft†and “heresyâ€. No more, fellow citizens! Today, we strike back and reclaim Free magic for all to use! Death to the Empress! Power to all!â€

Created 10 years ago by three of the southern states in Alysia, the Alvia alliance slowly grows in power and numbers, each day hundreds joining their cause as they grow tired of the abuse and oppression from the Empire’s witch hunts. Believing Free magic should be available to all to use, they are more than willing to use practitioners of Free magic in their ranks, whom the Empire consider to be heretics. Despite the risk associated with Free magic, they also believe that they can control it now compared to a thousand years ago and with it, bring a new era of equality and prosperity.

MAGIC:

Free magic:

The original form of magic created by the gods themselves and blessed unto the land. Drawing from a magical dimension of pure possibility called the Aether, Free magic has nearly unlimited potential. Not only that, it does not require long periods of studying or research to use, as all aspects of it are controlled by raw emotions. Some of the most powerful and awe-inspiring spells are born from Free magic, and to use Free magic is to open your mind to endless possibilities and dreams.

…However, there is a sinister side to Free magic. As it was born from nature itself, so does it carry nature’s untamed and vicious characteristics. Not even the most accomplished mages cannot fully understand Free magic completely, and even the most innocent use of it can lead to horrible consequences. As Free magic is heavily influenced by the thoughts and emotions by its user, even the tiniest bit of negative emotion can cause spells to backfire catastrophically, twisting the original intention of the spell into a horrible mockery of itself. By far the worst fate though befalls those who try and tame such Free magic, as they are consumed by what they seek and turn into monstrous beings called Faes, creatures born of the very essence of the Aether and seek nothing more than consume and search for an even greater source of power. Consequently, those who can actually manipulate Free magic without falling prey to its whims are some of the most dangerous mages in the lands, and are high up on the Empire’s kill list.

Charter magic:

Created after the Orion War by the Empire, Charter magic was created solely by men, and thus can be controlled and understood almost fully by most mages. Orderly, strict and intricate, Charter magic requires special focuses and reagents to cast, ranging from a simple magical glyph, to the ashes of some long extinct species. While it cannot match the raw power or potential of Free magic, it is much safer and easier to control, with almost no risk to the user at all. However, the Empire controls the usage of such magic absolutely, and to even use this magic, one has to undergo a blood ritual using the Empress’ blood, binding their loyalty and fealty to serve the Empire till the day they die.

Charter magic is limited only to elemental spells, basic psychic spells such as telepathy and telekinesis, and basic healing magic.

GLOSSARY:

Fae: Horrible, monstrous creatures of the Aether, some of these poor souls were once humans who were twisted by Free magic, turning them into ravenous beasts that lust after more magic. Ranging from the size of a small wolf to towering beasts the size of mountains, taking down a high ranked Fae require massive firepower and effort to overcome. Not only that, killing them merely returns them to the Aether, where the rest and regenerate till they regain enough strength, before the return to wreak havoc upon the physical plane again.

Witches/Warlocks: Also called heretics by the Empire, and Gifted by the Alliance, Witches/Warlocks are people born with a natural aptitude for Free magic, innocently discovering their potential during their preteen years. While all Witches and Warlocks can use Free magic, not all are immune to its corrupting effects, which is why the Empire conducts its witch hunts, to prevent the Free magic within them from getting out of hand by ending their lives early. However, there exist a few Witches/Warlocks that have a higher resistance to Free magic’s corruption, and as such can utilize it to a much higher degree than others, making them exceptionally dangerous opponents.

Empress Saria Auriasta: The 14 year old Empress of the Bariura Empire, some may question whether she is too young to hold such a pivotal position in the Empire. However, with the death of the late Empress Maria Auriasta, Saria’s mother, she has matured greatly in the 10 years that have passed. She understands that the witch hunts are unfair and unjust to them common folk, yet she knows the if left unchecked, Free magic will eventually grow out of hand and cause the rift between people to grow greater, causing great tragedy like the one which claimed her mother, who was killed by Alvia Alliance gunmen. She knows what she does is morally wrong, and every time it is with a heavy heart that she condemns another village to be razed to the ground.

I shall fight against the heinous crimes committed upon us common folk. There is no reason we can't all be at peace together.

Peace? Weak. If the empire wants a fight, why hold back what we have. You hunt us, we'll simply eviscerate the enemy with what they don't understand! hehahahahahahaha!!!

Feel free to use this character template which I ripped off from Seanzi, or create your own. Really, it's up to you.

Name:

Personality:

Appearance:

Powers / Skills:

Background:

Also, I'm okay with the current number of participants right now (HH, Wstfgl, shadow and me), though if anyone else wants to join, feel free to ask. Most likely I'll accept.

Also, I forgot to mention this earlier, but setting is somewhat steampunk mixed with magitek. In urban areas like the main city and stuff, expect heavy industrialization, but in the rural outlands, expect something equivalent to medieval times.

Name:  The Dusk Knight

Personality: The Dusk Knight rarely speaks, and never removes his armor. He speaks in a formal, almost archaic way, but he is by no means polite, especially when dealing with what he deems as rebel scum -- which pretty much extends to anyone who dares to go against any of the Empire's ironclad laws. He is relentless and completely without mercy, and will hunt those who dare to contact the Ruinous Powers to the ends of the earth.

Appearance: This Dude

Powers / Skills:

The Dusk Knight might be clad in heavy armor, but he moves deceptively fast for his apparent bulk, and is arguably among the best swordsmen alive. His choice of weapon is a pair of longswords, but his most distinctive trait is his signature Charter Magic -- six black hexagonal shields magically animated to move on their own accord which automatically block enemy attacks. These shields can absorb a large amount of magical energy, allowing them to ward off weak American damage  weaker forms of Free Magic. His armor is also made of a similar substance, conferring protection against hexes and curses, though sustained magical bombardment will cause his armor and shields to heat up and eventually melt.

He has a final last-ditch ability, which is to violently purge the pent-up magical energy absorbed by his shields and armor in a massive explosion. However, this uncontrolled release of magic will contaminate the surroundings in a manner not unlike nuclear fallout, possibly causing unprotected individuals to mutate into Fae -- and it is doubtful that even one such as himself could survive such an intense blast.

Background:

The Dusk Knight is one of the Bariura Empire's top enforcers, named as such for his tendency to appear before his enemies alone at sundown. He travels the various lands of the Empire on a single-minded quest to root out all Witches and Warlocks in the Empire, and has a near-supernatural skill at tracking said individuals down -- even the aristocracy may face his judgment, as evident from an infamous incident when he abruptly appeared at a royal banquet and decapitated the Empress' uncle without preamble, before wordlessly delivering evidence that the man had been consorting with Witches for his personal gain. Theories about his true identity abound, ranging from a bastard son of the former Empress to a former general of the Army sentenced to permanent house arrest, but since he has never dropped any hints about the face that lies behind the mask, it remains as one of the Empire's best-kept secrets.

Not necessarily in any particular order or relevance, though as a personal rule of thumb, I wait till a full cycle (AKA all players have posted) till I post my next entry. For relevance, we don't necessarily have to know each other right from the get go. We can steer the story till a point we meet.

It looks very generic for a rip-off. XD

Name: Mattheus "Matty" Lacy Strudwick
Age: 9

Personality: Matty is what adults would call a pleasant, obedient, if not a little quiet, young boy. He likes being alone, and the only thing he ever asks for are toys, which adults are only too happy to oblige. Toys are the only things that would bring a sparkle to his eyes. It's not just toy soldiers or chariots, the typical little boy toys. He also likes little wooden dolls, and his favourite plush toy, whom he affectionately names Plushie. He can spend hours playing with them.

Matty does pretty average in school. He is decent at language but fares badly for maths and science. However, some perceptive teachers have observed that he often demonstrates a rare wisdom for his age, that he knows more about what is going on in the world than he lets on. To most people, he is just a boy who smiles a lot and talks little.

Appearance: Even though it is agreed that Matty is placid, the same cannot be said of his hair. He has a thick mass of curly blonde hair that must be constantly tended to in order to look presentable. He is shorter than most boys his age and is slightly stocky, with a round, moon-like face.

Powers / Skills: He was born with an aptitude for Free magic, which is channelled through his nearest and dearest friends -- his toys. He can bring his toys to life and give them a personality of their own. However, all these personalities are actually different sides of his own personality, which he is too shy to express. Most of the toys have no use in combat and will not be listed here.

Plushie -- his best friend and trusted advisor, Plushie is a sweet but clingy plush toy who can never bear to be away from Matty for long, and is constantly hugging him or making cute faces. Plushie is also highly protective. If there is so much as a scratch on Matty, Plushie will attack the assailant with all his vigour. Plushie has the ability to reflect damage to any target he chooses when inflicted on himself. He does not know pain and will not get hurt, so any amount of damage can be inflicted on him and redirected without hurt on his side. The only way this effect can be nullified is to cut off Matty's magical hold on him (by removing him from Matty's line of sight, if possible, or redirecting his focus).

Firespine -- a wooden dragon toy. When in trouble, Firespine can turn into a real dragon, complete with firebreathing ability and thick hide, and can fly with Matty riding on it. Personality-wise, this mother dragon is a bit of a tsundere. She pretends not to like anybody, but secretly regards Matty as something like her son.

Others -- If threatened, Matty can also grant sentience to any inanimate object near to him, though the sentient object -- having no emotional attachment to him -- may develop an attitude of its own and do counter-productive things instead.

Background:

Matty was allegedly very close to his father, and always followed him around, even though he could remember nothing of it now. His father died when he was 4, so he figured he couldn't have spent very much time with him. Nobody told him how his father died, and he didn't ask, though he knew from overhearing some conversations that his father had been suspected of being a Warlock and had been slain by the Bariura Empire. Something told him not to let people know that his toys could come alive, and so he kept that a secret even from his family.

He lives with his mother and a housekeeper in a small house at the outskirts of town. They had been rich before his father's death, but his mother possessed no work-ready skills and was forced to dismiss all their servants, with the exception of the faithful housekeeper Marlene, a bossy old woman who delighted in controlling the weak mother and son. Matty, who had previously been homeschooled, went to school now and seemed perfectly accustomed to the life of a commoner.

I was considering that Matty might voluntarily take it into his head to join the Alvia Alliance somehow.

Name: Farius Al-Arfitz

Age: 48

Appearance: http://imgur.com/DBCxdP7

Personality: As the Empress' personal honor guard, he is strict, no-nonsense, and will not tolerate any violence of sorts in the palace, especially those directed to the Empress. While he is by no means overbearing and is in fact, a father to his men, he will do anything to protect the security and future of the Empire and more importantly, his Empress. In front of Saria however, he is kind and gentle, though this is no act. Having been by her side since her birth, he is almost like a father figure to her, and will sometimes even entertain her admittedly childish whims. He too is sympathetic to the plight of the common folk, but unlike the Empress, he has no qualms over doing more questionable deeds if it means building a brighter future for her.

Powers/Skills:

The Empress' Flame - An intricate magical glyph carved into his back, this glyph grants him the power over fire. From creating explosive fireballs to instantly incinerating those convicted of heresy, it is undoubtedly one the most simple yet effective forms of Charter magic, even sharing some qualities with Free magic as his power of fire is only limited by what uses he can think of it.

The Eye of the Empire - A magical sigil placed on his eyepatch, this simple glyph allows him to read into the psyche and thoughts of his opponents while in combat, allowing him to predict their every motion and counter appropriately. In calmer situations (AKA not in combat), he can even forcibly read his opponent's mind, although it places a lot of stress on him and people with high Free magic potential are much more difficult to read.

Flamberge - An ornate longsword with intricate runes carved into it, its elegance conceals the fact that this blade has taken the lives of hundreds of conspirators against the throne. The magical runes channel Farius' power, allowing him to superheat the blade and cut through even the thickest of armor with ease.

Background:

Born into the desert nation of Indra, which was soon annexed by the Empire, Farius was born as a slave, bought by the royal family to serve. Life was tough for him as an outsider in the Empire's capital of New Ampador, and he was constantly harassed and and bullied, even by his fellow slaves. One day when he was serving in the grand banquet hall under the previous Empress, Maria Auriasta, an assassin broke into the hall and pulled out a gun, intending to kill the Empress in front of all the guests to see. Ignoring like what seemed to be a suicidal decision and leaving the fighting to the royal guards, he charged the assassin directly, his superior physique allowing him to overpower the would-be assassin until the royal guards could subdue him. Touched by the fact a mere slave would potentially throw his life away for a person he was supposed to hate, she appointed him as her personal bodyguard, a decision which shocked many that the Empress would choose a filthy slave as her guard instead of the many knights she had.

Farius would be a dutiful bodyguard in the years to come, protecting the Empress and her newborn child, Saria, against many attempts, as well as earning respect from many, even from those who were opposed to him being her personal bodyguard. One fateful day however, a bomb blew up inside the palace, causing a distraction as the rest of the guards ran to investigate what had happened, leaving Farius alone with the Empress to guard her. The explosion turned out to be a distraction, as he and Maria were ambushed by a dozen gunmen. Despite fending them off with nothing but his blade, he was eventually overwhelmed as he slipped up, receiving a bullet in his left eye, incapacitating him. As the gunmen prepared to execute him, the unthinkable happened. Throwing herself in the path of the bullet, the Empress herself sacrificed her own life to protect Farius, as the bullet pierced her chest. Shocked by what happened, the gunmen failed to notice as the rest of the royal guards filed into the room, subduing them. The gunmen would later be identified as part of the Alvia Alliance, this attack being the catalyst that reignited the flames of war between the two forces.

Discovering that the Empress had laid her life for him, he contemplated ending his own life as payment for failing to protect her. However, the late Empress' last words came back to him: to make sure the same thing would never happen to her daughter, Saria. His passion reignited, he dedicated his life to protecting Saria, raising her as if she was a child of his own.

Hope my that none of this breaks any rules or anything. XD

Name: Locri Steel/"Queen" Neraphis Abaranth

Age: 22

Personality: Locri Steel is a determined, very steadfast girl. She strives for peace to flood the land and everyone she meets knows it well. She is kind, caring, and sweet, she has touched the hearts of plenty of people in her strife for peace. She has even managed to do the same to Bariura soldiers who had the heart to listen to her pleas. Though she searches for peace, she won't sit down and watch violence without acting on her own accord. Siding with neither the Bariura Empire or Alvia Alliance, she has a single goal of peace to unite both factions together, regardless of how absurd her dream.

Neraphis Abaranth is a cold hearted killer. She is Queen Neraphis, Reaper of Existence to anyone who knows of her (widely accepted self given title). She is a violent murderer who wants to destroy the Bariura Empire and the cursed Charter magic that brought her into being. She is rather psychopathic, though not stupid. She is highly intelligent behind her mask of insanity. With her power over free magic, she reaps her enemy wherever she goes, leaving no one spared, regardless of their standing. If they fight for the Bariura Empire, they are her enemy. With a twisted mind, she hunts.

Appearance: http://static.zerochan.net/Goroo.full.345591.jpg Or something kinda like this.

Powers: Locri Steel and Neraphis Abaranth both wield dangerously powerful free magic.

Locri Steel-Valkyrie's Light

This form of free magic strongly reinforces her beliefs of united peace. It's capable of tremendous strength using the powers of light/"holy" to aid her. From healing wounds, to banishing the darkness nearly anywhere, even peoples hearts, to cutting down her foes with golden arcs of power, to "smiting the unrighteous" with columns of searing energy. It is capable of many things good and bad despite being a "holy art". It all depends on the user.

Neraphis Abaranth-Harbinger's Darkness

this form of magic is part of the reason she holds her reaper title. Neraphis wields the dark energies all around with hatred and sorrow, which serves to fuel her power more. It's capabilities range from mass blackouts, to wicked gales of slashing power, to rotting flesh and live things as well and bring decay, to curses of pain and suffering, even as far as controlling certain Fea. This power derives from the darkness in hearts, in the air, and the corruption that permeates even the dirt of the world. This "dark art" is feared by both Alvia and Bariura for the exact reason that free magic collapsed.

Background: Locri was born to an average family and grew up as an average child. She did well in school and never had any complaints to speak of. The large problem she faced was the Bariura Empire pressing against their town just on the outskirts of both the Alliance and the Empire. When the town joined the Alliance, they were quickly abandoned by the Empire and they witch hunts followed soon after. Only her and her family were targeted by the Empire upon their visit. The Dusk Knight personally visited the town of Strata and weeded them out with ease. He quickly killed both her mother and father for the practice of free magic, and then tried to kill her as well. Only she didn't die.

Locri was the target of Charter magic, and though she seemed dead, only her brain was. At the age of 13, she was stricken down by the Empires magic and she "died" for 36 hours. She suddenly woke up to a burnt home, rain, mud covering her body, and white hair in place of once brown hair. This was the birth of the reaper, Neraphis. Rather than die, her personality was split in two to absorb the lethal blow into her body and mind. Just as if corrupted by free magic, the charter magic that was absorbed into mind her was channeled to a second personality which created the twisted and corrupt Neraphis Abaranth who shared Locri's memories until that point.

The Magic absorbed into her body did several things to her physically. Her hair was "stained" white permanently. She growth in height at 13 was stunted, and so she remained at the height of 5'2. Though her features matured, she failed grow due to the magic stunting. The last thing it did was prevent free magic to physically corrupt her. She cannot become a Fea thanks to this and may feely wield free magic, however, she already has a demon inside.

Now Locri travels to spread peace to both factions of the war with her power with only a certain awareness of Neraphis in her mind, though fully aware of the fact that she does have her demon. Neraphis travels to simply bring destruction to the Bariura who took away her family and peace of mind (sanity too).

Phew, close one, thanks. I'll have my character up sharpish!

Hope this is all ok.

Name: Merc Vintrevalan

Age: 81

Personality: Merc is a calm and composed individual, rarely losing his temper. He bears no hatred to anything and likes to share his wisdom with others. He is sympathetic to tragedy but will not let such things upset his decisions and calculations. He is a believer that gods gifted Free Magic to humans and that anyone who thinks otherwise is mistaken.

Appearance: http://media.animevice.com/uploads/0/6872/252621-medieval_mekix_super.jpg - Minus the arm blades. A sword hangs from his left hip by a series of leather belts. Merc also tends to wear a hooded cloak to hide under. He has dark black welts running from head to toe on his body, in a random array.

Powers: Merc is a powerful practitioner of Free Magic; he has never once stopped his connection to Free Magic and it has kept his body young as a result. Merc’s primary use of his Free Magic connection is the creation and manipulation of vortex’s of various sizes. He uses these vortex’s to transport himself, or anything he wills, to another location instantly.

Skills: Merc is an accomplished swordsman having had the better part of 60 years to perfect the art. However, he rarely utilizes this skill in combat preferring to rely on his Free Magic. He also has the uncanny ability to escape from captivity and location.

Background: Merc was raised in a mid-level noble family within the capital of New Ampador. For as long as he could remember, he had been able to access Free Magic and manipulate it to his own ends. Even though he was a child, he found he had control of the magic and seemed to be immune to its adverse effects. Having been raised being taught that Free Magic was evil, he kept his connection a secret from everyone he knew. However, during a wedding ceremony of his sister marrying a higher noble family’s son, his control over the Free Magic slipped and his secret was revealed when he killed a large majority of the guests. Horrified at his loss of control and knowing that the Empire’s soldiers would soon be upon him, he made his escape and disappeared into the world.

Soon after this accident, Merc discovered that he could no longer shut off his connection to Free Magic and came to believe that the gods had chosen him to be their emissary of their gift to mankind. From then on he called himself ‘The Conduit of Free Magic’ and travelled the Empire, pushing his beliefs onto others. He has brushed against the Empire’s soldiers and witch hunters on numerous occasions and has become somewhat well known as a brilliant escape artist. When the Alvia Alliance sought him out and asked him to join their cause, Merc decided to accept the invitation. However, he is not completely sold on their beliefs and instead has decided to use the Alliance for his own means.

So if I'm not wrong, the division goes like this:

Charter -- Wstie, Eche

Free -- me, Shadow, Yajuu

PREPARE TO BE ELIMINATED IF YOU'RE ON THE WRONG SIDE. Or squished to death by Plushie.
