[Discussion] Sorcerers II: The Sorcery-ing

131 posts in this topic

Background Story

I will be copy pasting the original.

---

Sometimes I wish I was born a Normal.

Ignorance truly is bliss. They live their lives without a care in the world, subconsciously aware that whatever problem they may have is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. They are not privy to the secrets of life, death and everything in between. They do not know what it is like pursue the mysteries of the Cosmos and revel in its power. They do not know what it is like to have our knowledge. Our power. Our curse.

My name is Theodore Grant III, Lord of Sorcerers, Master of Magic and Voice of the Cosmos. As I have known for the past sixty years as the Lord, my reign shall end this year, 2014 AD. My final act as the Lord is to commence the 50th War of Magic in order to decide who is worthy of serving the Cosmos as its voice.

I have selected the thirteen most accomplished, intelligent, powerful or promising Sorcerers from all over the world to compete in this war and the last one standing shall be the one who receives the limitless wisdom and power granted to me as the Master of Magic.

This war shall test you like nothing else ever has before. You may strategize, scheme, plot, threaten, deceive, negotiate or violate however you wish. Nothing is off limits, for it is impossible for you to draw out your true potential while shackled to petty rules.

Prove your worth, shatter your opponents and the limitless knowledge that I possess shall one day be yours.

Setting

Hello buddies.

This RP is a contemporary fantasy set in our world, with the existence of Sorcerers, the Cosmos and Magic being the only differences. So unlike most of my RPs, there are no Demons.

The story, as explained above, will be a War between the 13 top Sorcerers of the world. The winner will receive all the titles and knowledge held by the current Lord.

In order for the Sorcerers to win this war they will forge alliances with each other or with Sorcerers not participating in the war. On top of that they are able to craft Magic Weapons, called Gifts, and grant these to Normals. Normals granted a Gift are referred to as Champions, as they have become contractually bound to serve their Sorcerer.

----

THE EXACT SETTING WILL BE REVEALED AFTER I FINISH MY DISCUSSION WITH WST AND TIME.

The Thirteen Contenders

Contender: Ian Oswald Ross, the Monarch

Contender's Champions: -

Vassal's: Samuel Lee Curtis, the Original Sin; Etiennette Beauchenne

Vassal's Champions: Tenebrae; Lumiere

Contender: Zhu Kunru;

Contender's Champions: Layla Davidsen

Vassal's: Elaine L. Enfield, Last of the Alchemists;

Vassal's Champions: Leon Browning;

Contender:  Adeline Mae Harrington, Maleficent

Contender's Champions: Maria Yang Ye

Vassal's: -

Vassal's Champions: -

Terminology

Normal – Person who does not possess any magic power.

Sorcerer/Sorceress – Person capable of wielding the magic power granted by the Cosmos.

Magic – Every human is inherently powerless. All magic used in this world is essentially the power of the Cosmos channeled through a human.

Lord – The Lord is the mightiest Sorcerer on the planet. He is the only Sorcerer who is always able to directly communicate with the Cosmos and the only one with limitless access to the Cosmos’ limitless knowledge.

Cosmos – The Universe is actually an entity of limitless power and knowledge known as the Cosmos. Sorcerers are people capable of understanding and using the gifts of the Cosmos.

Champions – Normals granted a Gift from a Sorcerer. They do not possess any powers themselves other than the ability to summon their Gift, but the Gifts grant them limited forms of magic. When Normals receive a Gift from a Sorcerer they enter a contractual bond with the Sorcerer. The Gift is essentially a fragment of the Sorcerer's soul, so in order to use it it has to be used to aid the Sorcerer. In exchange for the Champion's loyalty the Sorcerer promises to fulfill one wish, regardless of what that wish is, once he becomes the Lord.

Gift – Weapons instilled with fragments of the creator’s soul, magic and will. Every gift grants their wielder the ability to use a form of magic decided by the creator. Because Gifts require a huge amount of energy to create and because it is impossible for anyone to wield more than 1 Gift simultaneously it is very rare for a Champion to possess more than three Gifts.

Gifts do not have to be carried around, they can be summoned by their Champion at will. Once a Champion is wields his Gift he is able to use the magic that has been infused in that Gift and is also able to use a power called 'Transcend.' When a Champion uses Transcend his soul fuses with the fragment within his Gift. Transcend alters the Champion's physical appearance and greatly increases his power for a short duration in order to be able to match a true Sorcerer.

Contender - Sorcerer who has been chosen to participate in the War of Magic.

Vassal - Sorcerer who has, for whatever reason, chosen to join forces with a Contender and fight for him in the war.

Before anyone asks, let me just confirm this is heavily inspired by Gamaran, Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night, Magi and Hoshi no Samidare.

Given my love for Fate/Zero, Hoshi no Samidare and Magi's theme songs, I declare myself a member of this new roleplay.

YOU ARE ON MY BANLIST THOUGH????

Oh.

But I am not on Wstie and Octy's banlist. Therefore majority wins.

Also don't worry dearie, you're not on my banlist either. I can still tolerate roleplaying with you~.

(but urgh now we come to the serious part I need a character that's cool enough)

Time and Wst have no say in this. I let them argue mechanics cause that makes my job easier, but that's it~

EDIT: in case anyone was wondering, I'm kidding >__>

I'm gonna continue my streak of bringing bad luck to Sean's roleplays by joining. >.>

I'll probably be a Champion again. But not as weak. Hopefully.

Okay, mechanics stuff:

We are following the Dimensional Schism in order to demonstrate how powerful everyone should be. Champions are Hero level, most Vassals are Paragon level, some Vassals and all Contenders are Legend level.

With regards to Contenders, while they are all skilled in various types of Magic, they'd be considered the best at something. No one Contender is a master of everything. So feel free to think of an unique power for your Contender (or Contender-level Vassal)~

Any objections?

EDIT: More mechanics!

The main schools of magic are Evocation, Transmutation, Conjuration and Prestidigitation.

  • Evocation is the ability to summon and control energy.
  • Transmutation is the ability to alter the properties of an existing object.
  • Conjuration is the ability to summon object out of nowhere.
  • Prestidigitation is the catch-all term for psychic powers.

I did enjoy the first one, so I might make a better character and join this one too.

In case anyone missed it, I edited the magic types into the previous post.

And one more rule: You can not undo what has been done.

Also! Editing the character sheet and asking everyone to pick 1 Specialty and 1 Weakness with regards to the schools of magic.

[18:51:08] Shao Xiong Lee: That alone bans time paradoxes, resurrection, cheap-ass anti-magic and some forms of cop-out ending.

I'm probably the reason for over half of these rules this time XD Just to bring this to light, I'm obviously not going to use Altruis again, and I've not yet decided to participate because I know lots of people got pissed at me last time due to my lack of posting.

Nahh, as long as you actually post joining is fine :x

ALSO YES MOST OF THE RULES ARE BECAUSE OF MONOMAGIC

But to be honest, everyone had some weird shit that made battles mostly cop outs.

Because I reuse characters, I got mine done in record time.

Used in Sorcerers

Name: Elaine L. Enfield, Last of the Alchemists

Status: Vassal

Age: Far older than she looks -- she was a teenager at the close of the last war.

Personality: Alchemists are often a few reagents short of a reaction, and Elaine is not really an exception. She is focused, methodical and professional on the job, surprisingly -- but off duty, she has a tendency to pick fights, offend people and overdose on doses of alcohol lethal to any ordinary human with little ill effect. She tends to be frank and sarcastic in her speech, and values knowledge and skill highly -- those who display talent or great insight gain her grudging respect, but she does not suffer fools gladly. She is very passionate about her work -- one could call her an sorcery otaku, perhaps.

Appearance: Elaine looks like some kid who hasn't quite finished high school, with shoulder-length black hair tied back into a ponytail, blue eyes, freckles and a short, unimpressive stature. and habitually wears a heavy white coat a couple of sizes too large and a pair of protective goggles, her standard protective gear for magical experimentation, wherever she goes. Even ballroom functions.

Signature Magic: Alchemy -- The Enfield family preserves the knowledge of this ancient branch of knowledge long after most of its other exponents died, mostly of self-inflicted chemical poisoning. The strength of Alchemy is its immense versatility in manipulating the elements of nature through Transmutation -- with enough preparation and a suitable source of energy, an Alchemist can reshape matter into forms that would give a material scientist a wet dream, turn mundane matter into incredibly strong, resilient super-materials and even reconstruct flesh and bone, healing wounds with speed and precision far beyond what a surgeon can accomplish with mere scalpels and thread.

Elaine's fighting style revolves around preparing specialist tools for her task, from miraculous healing salves to bullets packed with enough pent-up energy to destroy a building. In addition, a combination of Alchemical healing and reinforcement means she is a surprisingly capable combatant in close quarters and with firearms.

Weakness: Elaine's weakness is Evocation -- she can only produce minute amounts of power without an external source of power, and will tire out nigh-instantly from casting just a few moderate-level evocations. While this can be remedied via alchemical energy infusions, Elaine treats direct combat of this type as a strict last resort. She is also relatively weak at Prestidigitation magic, only being proficient at defending against it, though this might be more a result of her Highlander ancestors preferring to decapitate enemies than mind-fuck them to death.

Weaponry:

Traditional English Handicraft -- Most Sorcerers favor staffs of ancient oak or yew, frequently enchanted to aid in their spell-casting. Elaine eschews the traditional staff as her magical focus, instead using a custom-made bolt-action rifle built from magically-fabricated metals and wood carved from a lightning-struck oak tree on her family's ancestral lands. The intricate series of glyphs and enchantments woven into its structure make it act like a focus for her magic, and she can remedy her lack of innate magical power by casting Evocation-type spells through the specially-crafted magical cartridges she loads it with. Of course, while magic is fine and dandy, .30 caliber rounds meant for taking down charging Zulu warriors tend to be lethal enough in their own right -- and with the alchemical enhancement placed on them, they become the equivalent of high-caliber anti-materiel rounds.

In addition, it also has a detachable sword bayonet forged from the same unnatural alloys its barrel and receiver are made from, enchanted to serve as a magical focus for her Transmutation and Conjuration skills.

Sod Off -- A break-action Webley revolver loaded with high-explosive incendiary rounds. A tried-and-tested weapon from the glory days of British imperialism, bound to function where more complex, higher-maintenance guns fail.

The Coat -- This coat doesn't need a name. It transcends names! It is the ultimate culmination of centuries of research into apparel-related alchemy -- a coat whose every thread has been imbued with defensive magic of incredible power! Its alchemically-woven threads are stronger than the best modern science has to offer, making it bulletproof, heatproof and resistant to many forms of offensive magic, and yet being light, breathable and comfortable in all climates!

In addition, dirt and blood just slides off it like water off a duck's back!

Prometheus' Fire - A long briefcase containing a Barrett M-107 sniper rifle and seven silvery fifty-caliber bullets. These bullets contain the pinnacle of the Enfields' alchemy -- while completely inert when handled by Normals, when triggered using a secret magical activation sequence, a tiny enchanted mote of matter at the core of the bullet is converted into antimatter. The moment the magnetic field isolating it from the rest of the bullet is disabled, which happens up to five minutes after it is armed, the antimatter strikes the main warhead and detonates.

The amount of antimatter amounts to around a microgram, not enough to cause a large effect. However, the core of the weapon is a platinum lattice saturated with hydrogen at an atomic level, and the antimatter provides the right spark to ignite a nuclear fusion reaction.

Basically, a very small hydrogen bomb with the explosive yield of around half a kiloton of TNT, sufficient to annihilate practically anything on a direct hit. It can be fired from her rifle at a great distance, which is pretty much the only safe way to utilize it.

.

Background: The Enfield family has practiced the arts of alchemy for centuries, honing their art to perfection. The family even became strong enough to field a Contender in the last War -- however, the family was annihilated save for Elaine and her immediate relations in the closing stages of the war.

The family sank into seclusion and obscurity since then, losing almost their entire following and most of their prestige and power -- and disgracefully, the once proud Enfields have been forced to enter the war as vassals of another Contender. However, with every war comes opportunity, and Elaine, the head of the family for the last ten years, is determined to ensure the Enfields survive, if not thrive, from this bloody conflict.

Her one known Champion is believed to be a mercenary, a man named Leon Browning.

Name: Samuel Lee Curtis, the Original Sin

Status: Vassal, Contender-level

Age: 27, physically, but is actually 286 years old.

Personality: Cruel, sadistic and insane; nothing brings Samuel as much joy as the suffering of others. He relishes in their fear and will go out of his way to ensure everyone acknowledges how truly terrifying he is before he murders them. He will remorselessly manipulate and provoke anyone if he feels that it would be entertaining.

Appearance: Crazy assassin mode, civilian mode

Specialty: Conjuration -- Samuel had managed to create the ultimate weapon; which he named the Ouroboros. The Ouroboros is a sentient weapon, appearing as a steel snake’s head with a neverending chain of black and red energy. The Ouroboros was crafted by forging the souls of a dozen Sorcerers into the head of the Ouroboros, giving it life and binding it to Samuel. The Ouroboros communicates with Samuel telepathically and will obey his every command, but it will also repeatedly voice its hatred for its master.

Weakness: Prestidigitation --  Samuel only knows enough of Prestidigitation to be to protect himself from low and mid-ranked forms of Prestidigitation magic, but that is where it stops. Mind magic is for cowards.

Abilities: Fighting Style - Samuel’s fighting style revolves around using the Ouroboros to attack opponents from afar, or reel them in, as well as zip around the battlefield quickly, if not instantly, and close gaps between him and his foes. He uses his skill in Conjuration to create various small bladed weapons for melee combat and uses his evocation to summon black and red energy, shaped like amorphous serpents, to strike his foes and shield himself from attacks. Besides all that he uses his Transmutation in order to physically enhance himself, enabling him to make full use of his powers, even in melee range.

Other than his magical prowess Samuel is physically fit and extremely agile, making it easier for him to dodge most of what people throw at him and allows him to toy with them even more.

Fearmonger - If there is one thing Samuel loves more than power, knowledge or killing people, it would be toying with them. He has an arsenal of spells crafted to target the deepest fears of his enemies. His exceptional skill at Conjuration allows him to create a limitless amount of sounds or create a variety of creatures (like spiders!) that would send shivers over the spines of his enemies.

Feast on Fear! - The Ouroboros was a weapon crafted by inflicting death and misery upon his fellow Sorcerers; making it an utterly ruthless weapon that was forged for no other purpose than to torment its enemies. The side effect is that the Ouroboros, and Samuel, grow in potency whenever they ‘taste’ fear. They feast on the fears of their enemies, growing stronger when fighting people who are afraid of them.

Elise -- A finely crafted butterfly knife, given to him by the living members of the Ross family to serve as his implement for casting spells. It has been attuned in order to serve as a perfect fit for Samuel and allow him to cast the barrage of spells that he uses to viciously overwhelm his enemies in rapid succession.

Conjuration -- Samuel uses his exceptional skill as a Conjurer to craft a variety of bladed weapons. Most of them are small, like daggers, katars, kukris or tantos, but he is been known to create larger ones, like a zweihander, in order to prove a point.

Background: The name Samuel Lee Curtis makes many present day Sorcerers, well versed in the history of their kin, sick. He had committed more atrocities than anyone would care to recollect, all in the pursuit of knowledge and power and his efforts rewarded him with the title ‘the Original Sin.’

Not long after Samuel had attained the power he yearned for, he was confronted by the Ross family, a family of Dark Sorcerers. Despite their claim, they weren’t as vile as Samuel, but realized that having him on their side would be a great boon. Of course they realized someone as vile as Samuel would never submit to them, so they chose to kill him.

Instead of granting him a clean death, they took his soul and imprisoned it in a gem, allowing them to use their necromantic craft in order to bind that soul to their bloodline, effectively creating a Revenant who’s soul purpose was to serve the family. They understood that despite the great asset Samuel truly was, he was too vicious to roam freely. To compromise, they decided that he would remain slumbering until a War of Magic would break out and they would require his aid to win it.

Since then Samuel has awoken to participate in 4 separate wars, serving as a Vassal, and despite leaving a trail of blood with each appearance, he had only managed to secure a Ross family victory once.

Name: Ian Oswald Ross, the Monarch

Status: Contender

Age: 25

Personality: Ian has been raised to believe that he will one day rule as the Lord of the Cosmos, making him believe that his eventual victory is a foregone conclusion. He is calm, collected, confident, imperious, ruthless and believes that he (as well as the fact that he will win) is absolute.

Appearance: Defy him and he won’t look this zen.

Specialty: Prestidigitation -- Ian’s power is to control the minds of his enemies. He is capable of reading and manipulating thoughts, implanting thoughts, manipulate emotions, manipulate senses, manipulate memories and directly attack them mentally. Those who are weaker than him in the arts of Prestidigitation are even susceptible to him trapping them inside of their own mind for a limited time; while trapped they experience all the sensations of their body, but are unable to control it. He is able to implant someone else’s consciousness into the vacant body, as long as the mind he is transporting is willing or weaker than him.

Those who lack any mentionable skill in Prestidigitation are ever susceptible to mind control.

Weakness: Transmutation --  Ian isn’t very skilled or interested in transmutation. His mastery of the art doesn’t include anything above basic spells.

Abilities: Fighting Style - Samuel’s fighting style is a cerebral one. His movement in combat is very limited, other than the standard walk. He uses his specialty to attack an opponent’s mind in order to confuse, torment, incapacitate or directly damage their psyche. Even when using Evocation or Conjuration for combat he has a propensity to stay motionless as he attacks his opponents.

Psychology - Proper use of powers involving a human mind require an understanding thereof and Ian possesses this understanding. He knows and understands what makes people tick and knows exactly how to manipulate it to further his goals.

Sensor - Ian can vastly expand the range of his mind’s reach, but this leaves him stationary and unprotected. When in this state, however, he can accurately track down anyone he wishes within a large radius, as long as he knows what their minds ‘sound’ like.

Mental Link - Ian's ultimate power. He can link anyone's mind (if he manages to break through it's defenses or if the recipient is willing) to his, which allows him to perform several actions. He can either bestow his mental capabilities upon the recipient, which works best with an ally in order to increase the ally's abilities. He can manipulate the recipient's communicative abilities, effectively being capable of rendering someone unable to communicate at all. He can warp ones mind into insanity, causing the recipient to be overcome by madness. He can also alter one's personality entirely, making said person act in a way that would normally be inconceivable.

All of these effects are temporary, but the duration can be boosted by expending his energy on it.

Background: Ian was born into the Ross family. His father was a Necromancer and his mother an expert on the Dark arts. As soon as he was born they realized that he would come of age shortly before the next War of Magic and decided to train him for that very purpose.

His parents’ complete faith in him, rigorous training and near limitless potential boosted his confidence to the point that he also started believing that he was destined to win this iteration of the War of Magic.

A year before the War was scheduled to start, Ian’s father resurrected the legendary Revenant: Samuel Lee Curtis. Despite Samuel’s unhinged demeanor, it was obvious that he possessed great power and would  be a boon to Ian’s cause. The addition of Samuel to his allies only helped boost his belief that he would win this war.

My Contender is a Good-aligned person. He also has a Champion ready.

Other than that I shall, er, reveal more details later on. (when I actually have them)

He also welcomes Vassals, if anyone wants to align with the side of Good and Justice.

(I assure you I'll make him cool)

(Like Gandalf or something)
