Background Story

My grandpa always used to say: “Who needs flavour text when you’ve got robots?†My grandpa was a genius.

- Random passerby, 2075

Setting

Hello freunden.

This RP is a cyberpunk mecha series that rips off Gundam, Shadowrun and a little bit of Full Metal Panic.

Due to advancements in technology there were several important breakthroughs that would eventually lead to the creation of the very first Dragoon. The Dragon was a gigantic mobile weapon created in the shape of a human being. Initially this was impractical, but the human urge to ride giant robots overtook common sense and a considerate amount of time and money was dedicated making the Dragoon work.

Eventually they managed to miniaturize all the parts required for a fully functioning Dragoon, which in turn allowed them to make a smaller version. By 2040, many different corporations had started building their own kinds of Dragoons, whether under orders of one of the many nations or not, which eventually accumulated in the Great War of 2047.

This Great War, sometimes referred to as World War III, took place in the Middle-East. A historical hotbed of military and terrorist activity which eventually caused the third world war and the biggest one the world had ever seen. And it took place with Dragoons.

Almost every single nation of note had something at stake during this war and thousands upon thousands of Dragoons were deployed. Many nations did not even have the treasury required to afford purchasing these Dragoons, but with little choice they increased their put themselves in debt in order to be able to participate in the war.

Eventually the war came of the an end, three years later, after both sides decided that it was pointless. At least, that is what they told the public. In truth, nearly every nation in the world had run through it’s treasury in the first month of the war. Dragoons were expensive and no one could really afford them. After three years of measuring who had the biggest dick, they decided that they had dug a hole deep enough to bury them and all of their families. Going on any longer than this would just be retarded. As if it wasn’t that already.

The many corporations that produced Dragoons (a total of 12, at the time) basically owned every single nation of note between them. The debt the world had to these corporations was so large, that it would take centuries for them to pay it off if they had done so with their regular cash flow. Instead these 12 corporations managed to strike a deal with the nations. They managed to bargain extraterritorial status.

Now, this wasn’t something that came easy. Many nations opposed it, lead mostly by the United States, but when these corporations were given extraterritorial status by the likes of Russia and China, those that opposed it had no choice. Either they gave in or their enemies in the previous war would receive weaponry far more advanced than they could even dream of.

The wealth of these 12 corporations, henceforth known as the Mega Corporations, would lead to them buying huge plots of land over the entire world where they could basically do whatever they pleased. In their territories they were the law, the judge, the jury and the executioner and the morality of their host nations was of little concern to them. This lead to many Dragoons becoming easily purchasable by private owners. Even if owning a Dragoon was technically illegal in many countries, it was impossible to prevent.

Many Dragoons fell into the hands of terrorists, wealthy criminals, nations deemed international threats and all kinds of unsavoury creatures who could inflict a massive amount of damage if they weren’t stopped.

Luckily, not all Mega Corporations were bad. The Kaiju Zaibatsu, a Japanese Mega Corp named after the huge monsters that appear in movies like Godzilla, was one of the few with a functioning moral compass. Not only did they refuse to sell to those that were likely to commit heinous deeds using their machines, but they did something more important than that.

In 2060 they formed Aegis, an NGO backed by the many nations that used to form the now defunct UN. Aegis was set up by the KaiZai, funded by the KaiZai and received additionally backing from almost every single nation.

Aegis was tasked with rooting out the many problems that persisted in the world. While every nation had its own army outfitted with Dragoons, they decided to leave it to a singular entity to take care of the smaller problems that persisted on an international scale. While most nations were too busy posturing and showing off how awesome their army was, they also gave Aegis permission to operate freely within their territory so they never had to spend their own resources in order to make their countries a safe place.

Fastforward to 2075, where this RP takes place.

The Mega Corporations

#01 The Kaiju Zaibatsu - The founder of the KaiZai (as it is mostly referred to) was a huge fan of the kaiju genre of tokusatsu movies and chose to name his company after them. The Kaiju Zaibatsu, like every single company in the world, has one aim: making profit. They simply choose to operate differently from their fellow Mega Corps.
By funding Aegis and adhering to their code of honor they have created a base of loyal customers who will only order and use Dragoons created by KaiZai.
Their customers include Aegis, various western nations and wealthy philanthropists.

Terminology

Dragoon - Humanoid mobile weapon. 6 meters tall, outfitted ARES and possesses various kinds of weaponry depending on the type.

ARES - Autonomous Regenerative Explosive-interception Suite. In addition to their considerable armor plating, every Dragoon possesses ARES: regenerating reactive armor that destroys incoming projectiles before they can strike the Dragoon. Bypassing the ARES requires huge directed-energy weapons, enough firepower to overwhelm the defenses or giant melee weapons capable of piercing through the ARES.

Mega Corp - Corporations that managed to gain considerable amounts of money by selling Dragoons to whoever wanted to pay. Gained extraterritorial status after the Great War.

This RP is supposed to fit in the Real Robot genre, so while you can outfit your mecha as you’d like, anything outrageous will just get declined. Meaning no TransAm bullshit or whatever.

If you would like to contribute to the list of Mega Corps, be my guest.

PS: Mecha designs are based on the Mobile Suits used in Gundam Wing, in case you need something to reference~

Name: Raymond Montana Nagato

Age: 26

Personality: Ray is an extremely proud person who will put himself above everyone else every chance that he gets. He truly believes that being a Dragoon pilot is his calling and is glad to have received the chance to show his skills as an Aegis operative. While extremely selfish, he will do whatever he can to aid his allies in combat as long as it isn’t detrimental to whatever it is Ray wishes to achieve. Meaning that he won’t back off to aid his allies if it means walking away from a fight he had been longing for.

Appearance:  Very swag.

Dragoon:  Sohryu Corp. HMD-13 Highlander

Weapons:

Soryu Corp BF-Ω Avalanche-- A large high-caliber burst-fire cannon is mounted on top of the Highlander’s right arms. The Avalanche fires in bursts of multiple bullets, each of them being a dual-stage projectile capable of firing a second bullet the moment it gets stopped by the opposing Dragoon’s ARES. By firing in bursts and using dual-stage projectiles the Avalanche greatly increases the chances of strikes to successfully land on the enemy. The Avalanche can be detached and reattached at any time to increase the Highlander’s mobility.

'Phalanx IV' 20mm Close-In Weapons Systems -- The Highlander carries two secondary auto-cannons in shoulder mounts. These provide high firepower at short ranges, overwhelming enemy Dragoons' ARES through sheer volume of fire, though it requires multiple hits for the smaller, lighter projectiles to penetrate a Dragoon's armor. Each of the cannons carries 1200 rounds of ammunition, enough for 12 seconds of sustained fire. Due to the less powerful rounds used, the Phalanx guns can fire on full-auto instead of in bursts.

Soryu Corp BFS-A Zantetsuken -- A large sword crafted to fit the size of a Dragoon, with the weight to match. Striking ARES with an ordinary steel sword would cause the sword to shatter, in order to prevent this the Zantetsuken was developed over the course of several years and costed close to 100 million dollars in order to imbue with with regenerating nanotechnology. The Zantetsuken is light enough for the Highlander to be able to wield it proficiently, but has the weight needed to break through ARES if swung with enough force, a feat the Highlander is more than capable of. The Zantetsuken rests in a sheath at the Highlander’s left hip.

Abilities:

ARES Bastion --  Default equipment for every Dragoon produced during and after the great war. The Autonomous Regenerative Explosive-interception Suite is an active defense system consisting of an advanced sensor suite that detects all incoming projectiles, and panels of nano-material armor covering the entire surface of the Dragoon that explosively eject the surface layers of the armor to deflect or destroy them before they can even reach the Dragoon, before using nano-fabrication techniques to regenerate the lost armor. This makes Dragoons almost invulnerable to conventional anti-armor weapons like RPGs, as only sustained volumes of high-caliber fire can overwhelm the ARES and strike the enemy Dragoon itself. In addition, since the ARES destroys projectiles by essentially hurling red-hot metal shards at them, it is near-impossible to go within 100 meters of a hostile Dragoon on foot without being reduced to hamburger meat.

However, the ARES is not invulnerable -- it provides no defense against (admittedly expensive, incredibly bulky and slow-firing) laser and particle beam weapons, it can be overwhelmed by massive volumes of firepower, and since Dragoons are heavily-armored enough to withstand the ARES' explosive shrapnel, Dragoons frequently dispatch each other at point-blank range using specially-reinforced melee weaponry in lieu of using ammo-hungry firearms. In addition, since the ARES system relies on active sensing to detect incoming fire, it lights up the machines in question like beacons, making stealth impossible when ARES is turned on. Since the head contains the sensors required for the ARES to work, it is by necessity more lightly armored, and head-shots can cripple a Dragoon with fewer shots and without killing the pilot.

The Highlander’s ARES is equipped with the Bastion; meaning that there is an additional layer of armor plating underneath the ARES. This armor plating ensures that the Highlander is tough enough to survive through the barrage of gatling fire and exploding ARES when it gets in melee range. The additional plating along with the massive shield attached to the Highlander’s left arm ensure that the Highlander is extremely durable in comparison to most Dragoons.

All-Terrain Mobility Systems -- The Highlander’s equipped with jet thrusters on its back for bursts of acceleration and short-distance flight capabilities. In melee combat, it can also activate its jet thrusters while pointed at an enemy in a last-ditch attempt to overheat their electronics or injure their pilot. In addition, the Dragoon is equipped with supercavitation systems to allow it to move as easily under water as it can on land, making it truly an all-purpose weapon.

Due to the weight of its weaponry the Highlander is normally slower when compared to other Dragoons of its generation, but if it detaches the arm cannon its speed will exceed average. Dropping the shield would further increase the Highlander’s mobility.

Background: Raymond - Raymond mother was a Dutch soldier and commander within the European Union Dragoon Corp, a service branch of the European Union’s military. Immediately after the Great War the bond between the EU and the KaiZai tightened as they both had a similar vision of the future. Raymond’s mother became one of the many representatives of the EU and met the man she would eventually marry, a KaiZai R&D scientist.

Raymond was born shortly afterward and grew up surrounded by his parents’ work. When he got old enough to understand everything, he picked up bits and pieces of information as he watched his parents work. Through his mother he learned a ton of intricacies of Dragoon warfare before he even knew how to pilot one.

When Aegis was founded both of his parents transferred to start working there, further increasing Raymond’s exposure to Dragoons. Around this time he had gotten extremely curious about the interior of Dragoons and repeatedly begged his mother to take him into the cockpit with her. Eventually she conceded and brought him into her Dragoon, giving him his first glimpse of actually piloting a Dragoon.

Through simulations and video games Raymond got his first experience as a pilot and by the time he was old enough to begin actual training and learn how to pilot a Dragoon he was lauded as a genius, picking it up much faster than any of his classmates. It didn’t take long before he joined Aegis as a full fledged Dragoon pilot.

Highlander - The Highlander was a result of a long and arduous process to create the perfect duelist. The scientists of Sohryu Corp, a subsidiary of KaiZai, spent a ton of time and money developing a Dragoon that offered the perfect combination of mobility, mid-range firepower, close-range firepower and durability. The Highlander became a top-of-the-line duelist that offered destructive power that, at the time of its creation, was unmatched from within the mid-range.

It’s name was taken from a almost century-old movie, because when the Highlander enters the fray by the time the battle ends “there can be only one.â€

Hi

Obviously, I was something of a co-conspirator in this project

Name: Hiro Akagi

Age: 28

Personality: Seemingly the typical exaggeratedly calm, cool-as-ice fighter pilot stereotype upon first impression, Hiro is in reality a laid-back, cool-as-ice perverted otaku whose exaggerated couldn't-care-less attitude applies even to his proclivities -- he unabashedly declares his top-of-the-line machine to be 'his waifu', slapped a holo-stencil of an anime girl in place of his squadron insignia, and has been reprimanded repeatedly for hitting on his fellow pilots and his support crew to no avail. He prefers thinking on his feet instead of rigidly following SOP, which leads to his superiors deeming him a loose cannon -- however, his presence is tolerated; not only because of his in-depth knowledge of both allied and enemy Dragoons and their combat tactics, but because he is a genuine follower of Aegis' philosophy, choosing to fight for them not just for personal glory but for the sake of those who can't protect themselves.

He is, however, rather prejudiced against the national militaries Aegis is sworn to assist, seeing them as ineffectual, weak-willed pawns of the Mega Corporations, leading to friction when he has to work alongside them or deal with them on a professional basis.

Appearance: Such Nippon, Many Bushido

Dragoon: Yamato Heavy Industries DD(X)-22 Shimakaze

Weapons:

GAU-88 'Avenger III' 30mm Assault Cannon -- Resembles a six-barreled auto-cannon like the ones seen on modern-day jet aircraft, housed in a casing that makes it resemble a Dragoon-sized assault rifle. The Assault Cannon uses a railgun mechanism to fire a hundred armor-piercing slugs every second, allowing it to overwhelm and destroy an enemy's ARES with an accurate fifty-round burst at distances of up to three kilometers. However, while the GAU-88 is accurate, (relatively) long-ranged and effective, the 3000 rounds of ammunition it carries often runs out in protracted engagements, forcing it to ditch the weapon and use short-range weaponry instead. In addition, the wear and tear on the gun's barrels that is the result of firing a railgun at a hundred rounds a second means that the Avenger requires barrel changes after every mission, and is limited to firing in up to one-second bursts.

'Phalanx IV' 20mm Close-In Weapons Systems -- The Shimakaze carries six secondary auto-cannons, four of them in shoulder mounts and two of them concealed in its forearms.

Hyper-Carbon Progressive Blades -- The Shimakaze was designed for performance and stealthiness, greatly limiting its ammunition load in comparison to slower, heavier Dragoons. Therefore, the Shimakaze is designed to be equally capable at close-quarters combat as it is at a distance, and in addition to its considerable speed, also carries a pair of combat knives styled after US KA-BAR knives holstered on its hips. These specially-reinforced knives are made from an immensely strong but expensive carbon nanotube-based composite and use nanotechnology to self-sharpen and maintain a molecule-thick edge, preventing them from instantly dulling or snapping upon striking ARES armor plates and allowing them to slice or pierce through nearly anything with impunity. In addition, smaller blades are concealed within its fingertips and feet as backup weapons.

Abilities:

Stealth -- The Shimakaze is one of the few Dragoons in existence equipped with stealth technology, which was largely seen as superfluous thanks to the defensive power of ARES. However, to counter the threat of energy weapon-armed Dragoons capable of crippling another Dragoon at long range, the Shimakaze has stealthy features built in to improve survivability. This provides it an important edge in urban, night-time and marine combat where eyeballing the enemy is of limited utility, as it is able to close into the killing range of its assault cannon without detection -- however, activating ARES broadcasts radio waves that render the point of stealth moot, so it can only effectively hide from sensors by deactivating its own ARES, making it vulnerable to enemy fire.

Active Camouflage -- To complement its stealth, the Shimakaze's modified armor can change color to blend in with its surroundings -- however, this effect can only be activated when ARES is turned off, and is ineffectual if the machine is in motion.

ARES Kai -- Default equipment for every Dragoon produced during and after the great war.

The Shimakaze's ARES is modified for improved stealth characteristics -- the composite armor that forms its ARES has radar-jamming properties, and by purging the top layers of its armor and engaging stealth, it can hide itself from view at long distances or blind enemy sensors at close range. However, its ARES is noticeably thinner than in most Dragoons, requiring less firepower to penetrate.

All-Terrain Mobility Systems -- The Shimakaze is equipped with jet thrusters across its chassis for bursts of acceleration and short-distance flight capabilities.

Background: Built by Yamato Heavy Industries, a Yokohama-based subsidiary of KaiZai well-known for constructing parts used in Dragoon manufacturing and the orbital heavy-lift industry, the Shimakaze is a bleeding-edge Dragoon built to counter the threat of newly-developed laser weapons. Due to laser weapons' ability to cripple or destroy other Dragoons with a single long-distance, unavoidable shot, a game-changer in the close-quarters engagements that characterized post-War Dragoon combat, the stealth technology of the late 20th century, once rendered obsolete due to incompatibility with the ARES system, was implemented in this next- generation weapon to allow it to close into killing range more safely than previous models-

Wait, you meant character background, right?

Hiro's father was a Dragoon commander who was killed in action in the War of 2047 when he was but a child, and influenced in part by his mother and in part by the glorification of Dragoon combat in the mass media, he grew up always wanting to pilot a Dragoon in the service of his country. He enlisted with the Japanese Strategic Dragoon Force in 2065, hoping to follow in his father's footsteps, and graduated with distinction thanks to his seemingly-encyclopedic knowledge of Dragoon warfare, a result of his lifelong obsession with the machines.

However, two events in his life caused him to turn his back on that promising career. Firstly, he came across classified documents that detailed his father's squadron's involvement in the War of 2047 -- he was horrified of how his lifelong hero was not in fact the paragon of heroism he'd believed him to be, but a ruthless pragmatist who had concealed his team within civilian habitations and mercilessly executed the pilots of disabled Dragoons in Japan's campaign against Chinese forces. Secondly, while on peacekeeping duties in Eastern Europe in 2071, he witnessed a skirmish between Dragoons of the Pan-Pacific Defense Consortium and their rival Phoenix Corporation that resulted in horrific civilian casualties -- however, since both corporations practically owned huge chunks of the Japanese government, he was forbidden from intervening directly, and was court-martialled when he attempted to use his own Dragoon as a shield to protect the civilians, resulting in the precious, expensive machine getting totaled. Disillusioned, he quit the force and spent three years as a NEET, living off his savings from his time in the force and wallowing in self-loathing.

An agent of Aegis contacted him six months ago, offering him a chance to fight for what was right instead of dancing to the tune of the Mega Corporations, and he agreed to join -- his father might not have been the man he wished him to be, but that merely meant he could try to be the better man. However, the habits he picked up in his time as a NEET never quite left him.

P.S. My mecha designs are ripped off from Muv-Luv instead because LOLSTEALTH

Name: Douglas McArthur

Age: 46

Personality: A veteran of proxy wars, Douglas has seen his fair share of conflicts around the world, complete with all its horrors and tragedy. Too many times has he seen hot blooded youths join the Mega Corps as wannabe Dragoon pilots, only to toss their lives away in a short and uneventful explosion, fighting as expendable proxies for their masters. A father to his men, he may be grim and sarcastic, but he will do his utmost to prevent them from becoming another bloody mark on the battlefield.

Appearance: THIS GLORIOUS MAN

Dragoon: Tennin Forgeworks "JF-3000K Hayate Kai"

Weapons:

M-148 “Widow†25mm Laser EBR – When the ARES system was invented, conventional sniper weapons and battle rifles soon fell out of favor, as their single shot capabilities failed to penetrate the hailstorm of explosive shrapnel the ARES system used to protect itself, lacking the sheer volume of firepower to overwhelm it. However, with the advent of energy based weapons, the humble marksman weapon once again found a place in Dragoon armories everywhere. Accurate, almost instantaneous travel time, long effective range, compounded with the ability to ignore the ARES system made lasers the optimal choice for such weapons, and the Widow was one of the most recognizable and famous of them all. With an effective range of over 8 kilometres, it is the weapon of choice for the modern discerning marksman, capable of eliminating opponents outside of visual range.

E6 Las-Sniper Kit – Not so much of a weapon as compared to an attachment, this barrel and sight combo snaps onto the Widow EBR in a matter of seconds, transforming it from a battle rifle to a fully fledged sniper rifle, the M-148S Widowmaker. While it has an even slower firing rate than the Widow, the barrel supercharges the laser beam even further, granting it even longer range and much more power, capable of cutting through an apartment building from over 20 kilometres away. Fearsome and deadly in the hands of a skilled marksman, the Widowmaker is most well known for the infamous 2057 assassination of the late Kilimanjaro Orbital Conglomerate president, Mogame Imbuwe. Despite being inside a bulletproof limousine, flanked by 8 Dragoons, the Widowmaker tore through one of the Dragoons cleanly through its midsection, before striking and utterly destroying the limousine Mogame was in, turning the ground below it into molten glass.

Twin Linked 'Phalanx IV' 20mm Close-In Weapons Systems  â€“ Mounted in a pair on the Hayate’s left arm, this simple yet deadly weapon fires 20mm armor piercing shells with a high fire rate, compensating for the Widow's weakness at closer ranges as well as functioning as a backup weapon.

Hyper-Carbon Vernier Blades – Mounted on the arms and feet of the Hayate, these simple armament hold two purposes. First is being the main melee weapon of the Hayate, transforming simple dodges and evasive maneuvers into pirouettes of death and dismemberment, although at most it can only cripple an enemy Dragoon, due to its lack of ability to actually penetrate the ARES without destroying itself. Rather, it was built to reduce drag and improve the aerodynamics of the Hayate while in flight, so actually fighting in melee is not recommended.

4 x 65mm Smoke Grenade Launchers – Mounted on the inner shoulders of the Hayate, these old-fashioned tube-launched grenades explode into a cloud of diffractive particles, reducing the effectiveness of enemy radar as well as their energy weapons, adding to the Hayate’s elusiveness.

(Optional) GZ-057 “Themis†85mm OTH Particle Lance – The Energized Particle Over-The-Horizon 85mm Energy Lance, or Themis, is more at home on a battleship than in the hands of a Dragoon.  However, when mounted on these walking weapon platforms, its deadliness increases many folds. The mobility of a Dragoon combined with the devastating power of the particle lance is deadly force to be reckoned with, and many commanders have opted to use this tactic in battle to great effect. However, the weapon itself comes with many drawbacks, limiting its use in the field. Firstly, it is an extremely heavy weapons system, weighing in at over 5 tons, and secondly, not many Dragoon reactors can supply enough power to the weapon to be fired effectively. In the Hayate’s case, while it is able to lift and fly while carrying the weapon and supply it with enough power (just barely), it is forced to remove all other weapons except the Vernier blades to compensate for the weight and energy demands this beast of a weapon requires. However, once in position high above in the sky, it allows the Hayate to unleash a destructive beam from the sky in a single devastating yet surgical strike.

Abilities:

Auxiliary Energy Cells – Mounted in place of where spare ammo magazine would be kept for use in conventional projectile weapons, these external power cells provide the Hayate with enough energy for its weapon systems, flight and ARES.

Enhanced Aerial Vernier Thrusters – Mounted on the hips of the Hayate, these are the key to its superior flight capabilities, as well as granting it extreme speed in combat. However, they guzzle energy when in operation, which is why auxiliary energy cells have to be used.

 ARES Kagami -

Default equipment for every Dragoon produced during and after the great war.

The ARES Kagami combines all this with a prototype energy dispersion shield, capable of diffusing or even outright reflecting energy rounds fired at it, although power strains make it capable of operating at only a few seconds at a time. This can be used in both defensive and supportive situations, such as reflecting an ally’s beam shot from the ground while in the air to reflect it downwards, striking distant targets that may have normally been out of reach.

All-Terrain Mobility Systems -- The Hayate is equipped with jet thrusters across its chassis for bursts of acceleration and short-distance flight capabilities.

Background:

Born in Southern USA under the Phoenix Corporation’s jurisdiction, he like every other boy his age was drawn in by the fancy allure of being a Dragoon pilot. Enlisting as a proxy soldier for the Phoenix Corporation, he was only 18 when he entered his real conflict, a bloody battle known now as the Great War. The destruction and carnage he saw there scarred his mind, although his contract/debt to the Mega Corp prevented him from leaving their employ. Working hard and miraculously escaping death multiple times partly due to skill and luck, at the ripe old age of 43 he actually managed to pay off his debt, a fact that shocked many as others would have died in combat before they could finish paying up, leaving their future generation with debts. Surviving for 25 years, he left his employer, and while other sane people would have used this chance to settle down and retire, the scene of the Great War still lingered fresh in his mind, and in the end he vowed his life to make sure others would never have to go through this again. Seeking Aegis, they eagerly welcomed him due to his experience and his reputation. Rising to the rank of Master Sergeant in just 3 years, he now trains the rest of Aegis’ recruits, making sure they fully know what they’re getting into.

Hayate Kai:

Built for aerial superiority as fighter planes were soon phased out to make way for Dragoon research, the Hayate Kai. While air to air combat between Dragoons are rare, height advantage still plays a role even in the near future, allowing Dragoons to strike from any angle. For this task, the Hayate Kai is equipped with precision weapons, striking down enemies and providing support for their frontline troops. When equipped with the Themis, its role becomes that of heavy artillery, coordinating with ground teams to devastate even bases with a single shot.

While not meant for close range combat, its twin Vernier thrusters give it unprecedented speed on the battle field, either overwhelming the opponent with fast strikes, or quickly retreating to a more advantageous position.

He does everything with machine-like precision and completes every mission given to him without fail. A natural leader, a perfect soldier and an outstanding human being, some people bet good money on whether or not the guy has a halo and pair of wings hidden somewhere in his closet.

Lawrence belongs to an independent autonomous unit consists solely of himself. Despite of that, he often works in tandem with pilot Hiro Akagi for recon and sabotage operations. Lawrence sincerely believes that it’s not the circumstances of his birth, but the things he does in life, that define him.

Dragoon: Yamato Heavy Industries DD(Z)-111 Murakumo

Weapons and Abilities:

Murakumo is an experimental dragoon designed toward unparalleled ECM capability. In exchange for its stealth chassis, drones and superior speed, the mecha lacks conventional ARES-piercing equipment and is thus more geared toward smoke and mirror tactics in combat.

Experimental “Murder of crows†Assault Drones – 12 detachable units outfitted with independent thrusters. Aside from surveillance, these units act as extenuators to the Murakumo’s constantly emitting disruptive signal, which has a starting 54.8% chance of being picked up by hostile Dragoons under the guise of a friendly transmission. This chance increases over time as the decrypting modules analyze the ambient spectrum. Once a Dragoon is subjected to hacking, depends on the complexity of its design, Murakumo can complete a wide range of feats from creating false negatives in its sensor, shutting down parts of the machine, or even gain completely control over it. The drones are also armed with light machine guns for human targets, but these are not capable of taking down ARES.

Aside from that, the drones are also equipped with EMPingers. A red glowing piston rises from the main frame slowly before slamming down abruptly, creating an ear-splitting PING sound that can shatter glass and even make people’s eyeballs explode from within their heads. This has the effect of forming an EMP blast within a remote area, perfect for disrupting and deactivating machineries.

Experimental Adaptive Chassis (EAC) – A nano-embedded layer of self-shaping composites with programmable bioinspired microstructures allows the machine to quite literally evolve itself on the battlefield, forming parts best suited for the operation. Tests reveal that Murakumo can withstand the crushing depth of the Mariana Trench or the scorching lava within a volcano given enough time to alter itself. These extend to completely mimicking an enemy mecha by assuming its IFF and outward appearance, thus leading to the Murakumo occasionally being dubbed “The Thing†by its engineers, referencing a shape-shifting monster in a classic horror.

ARES – The EAC is capable of evolving ARES. However, if it is currently occupied by another adaptation, for example forming an ablative beam coating layer, the Murakumo is without the protection of this conventional defensive layer.

Enhanced Stealth Drive – Streamlined designs in addition to dedicated parts enable the Murakumo to conceal everything of itself using bleeding edge jamming tech: heat signature, noise, EM profile. In this case, the EAC will shift toward the structure of metamaterial so as to conceal even the mecha’s visual outline, putting it right out of the visible spectrum. The drawback being that this mode requires tremendous power output to sustain, which means the machine can only maintain it for 10 minutes at best before auxiliary reactors kick in, at which point it is running on fume.

Hyper-Carbon Progressive Blades – A pair of molecule-thick blades for close quarter combat.

(Optional) MITE-Microwave Infrared Thermal Emitter – Nominally Flamethrower 2.0, the MITE was derived from the classic Active Denial System, which boils the water and fat molecules beneath the skin, causing excruciating pain without risking permanent damage, barring unforeseeable nervous injuries.

Adjustment to the wavelength and a massive powerboost now allows the MITE to boil any organic compound from the inside and explode sealed objects containing fluid. Due to the microwave beam which can easily bypass armor and incinerate the human inside, Mukakumo can substitute its drone pack for the weapon in the event where firepower against Dragoons is needed. Note that in exchange for its power, the weapon has extremely limited range and thus is deemed unsuitable for long-range combat until a guiding barrel mechanism can be devised.

Backstory:

To many of his colleagues, Lawrence is an enigma. He is the military version of a mysterious transfer student, himself an independent unit sent to reinforce the Grey Squadron operating deep behind the enemy’s line. To those with the rank and the clearance, however, Lawrence is actually designated as project P.H.A.N.T.O.M (Personal Heuristic Autonomous Neural-Tactical Operating Matrix), mankind’s first successful attempt at replicating the ghost within the machine. Originally belonged to a rival corp infamous for its various inhuman experiments, test subject Lawrence was retrieved after a costly espionage operation and deemed far too valuable to destroy once scientists learned of his origin.

Being a lab-grown embryo that has undergone massive cybernetic treatments, the pilot is in fact more machine than man, boasting superior endurances, powers, mental capacities. This is further enhanced by his flawless compatibility with the DD(Z)- 111 Murakumo, where information and feedback gathered by the machine are directly transferred and computed by the array of nano-processors within his brain, leading to his breaking of various performance thresholds previously thought unachievable by human.

Ingkells, unbeknownst to most, suffers from an inferiority complex, where he believes that everything he has was given and not from him attaining them.
