Roleplaying: A History

19 posts in this topic

If you're anything like me, you've been roleplaying for a long time and often reflect upon your 'glory' days, and by glory, I mean when you used to hunch over a keyboard and a bag of chips at 3:47 in the morning while Gorillaz blows out your headphones and your character has just arrived at The Tavern.

Yeah, if you're anything like me, you remember when Yahoo! messenger had custom chat rooms--damn I'm old.

Anyway. I've always been very interested in learning how people started roleplaying, so that's what this thread is all about: taking a walk down memory lane. Share your story with the rest of us!

I'll go first.

-----

Yahoo messenger was my first experience with roleplaying. The user chat rooms were very popular and hosted a wide variety of settings in which people roleplayed and battled. I took interest and tried my hand at the foreign art form, and quickly fell in love.

Soon, I met a guy who had created a website on Geocities (feeling older yet? ) that was based around roleplaying. I believe the first iteration of the site was Pan's House and the second was Jing's All Out RPG. It was a site where you chose a character from any anime (DBZ being the main atrraction), battled other people over Yahoo! messenger and gained experience, bought abilities, and then entered yourself into a Saga that was written by the webmaster.

After this, a friend of mine from the site invited me to join a forum he had found, The Forgotten Realms of Ancient Zandof. From what I was told at the time, it was the largest and most active forum on the net; as I can recall, the activity certainly supported that claim. All roleplays existed within the same world, and in my very first adventure, I stumbled across the Queen (and forum owner) and met her husband (co-forum owner). By the end of the storyline, I had killed the king and taken his place upon the throne.

From there, my character and the Queen moved to a different land (a new forum whose name I can't remember) where we started anew. Also around this time, I was active on The Village of Bukovi, another spinoff forum from Zandof; Swords and Sunflowers, a forum dedicated to Samurai Champloo; and Gaia Online.

Shut up, I was young.

After a long hiatus, I came back to roleplaying; at the time, I was big on Pokemon and so I became very active on Umbreon's Ghost Tower, a massively popular Pokemon roleplay forum at the time. It was there that I really began to tune up my writing, because anything I had produced in years prior was, in hindsight, horrifying.

But I vividly remember the day I searched 'roleplay forum' back in what I want to say is early 2009. May, perhaps? Either way, I almost didn't click the first damn link Google provided, because Surreal Twilight came off as the title to a Stephenie Meyer-inspired fanfic starring Edward Cullen & Draco Malfoy.

I expected the worst.

What I found was simply the best. S*T was the ultimate haven for roleplaying that I've found and I severely miss those warm Summer nights of 09', whether it was Skyping silliness with ack! and Antwaine, dying from swine flu whilst annoying Bleck with the Bible, kicking it with the OOC Mods (the coolest kids around!) or providing comedic gold over in mIRC. I have very fond memories of that forum, when it was a simpler time and all we had to worry about then was getting good grades in high school and Malgen spouting a long-winded-but-extremely-thought-provoking lecture.

And here I am now, still hanging around because this place is truly special. It isn't as active as it used to be, but I've made some of the coolest friends thanks to this forum and I'll always be thankful for that.

Oh, maybe I should talk about my short short journey then. Maybe.

Well, it all started off as fanfic. Asian fan fic to be precise.

2010... I think, I found some Asian bands online, Korean was the first and it was called DBSK. I thought the guys were hot so I continued searching. Then I found more and the Taylor swift /crap/ music I listened to all the time was never turned back on again. After this small obsession with Korean music, I found more. Eventually all leading up to anime and dramas and movies and everything. I started to join fandoms. Became an avid follower of every twitter account, tumblr, Facebook, YouTube, etc of every famous as sian human or character. Being a fandoms, fanfics happen.

So I found this site, which was just slightly starting off at the time, called Asianfanfics.com. I started writing there, but unfortunately the first comment I ever received to a very cliche story I wrote was

"that's not how you spell his name! How dare you insult my bias from that group!"

Maybe a few not included mean words were thrown in there. I thought fanfiction writing might be the hardest thing on planet earth. That site, unfortunately is where I wrote my first sort-of-erotica thing which was making me blush all too much and I had written nothing yet. But seriously, that site is a headache now, but at the time It was totally challenging for me..

Later on it was on livejournal that I started writing fanfiction, but that place was so confusing and it was a pretty ugly site. I like pretty sites like this one. ^^ I started roleplaying on live journal too. But only after the very first roleplay I joined on Asianfanfics.com. This forced me to leave fanfiction writing for awhile. I joined as Huang Zitao from a Korean band.. Called Exo. He was my favorite. And this roleplay was not Alternate universe. Instead I was expected to act as that group member like I really was him.

Then I continued joining roleplays on there and it caught on with the rest of the site. Eventually all the excessive profiles people made in order to make characters had the site running slow and for a week I didn't get to roleplay. That was the worst thing that could happen at the time. So they made a website called Roleplayrepublic.com.

Roleplayrepublic.com offers a variety of member created roleplays and a majority of them are geared toward yaoi or male homosexuality. This was something I LOVED LOVED LOVED. Now it's just meh. Loved this place back when all the gangsters weren't there and people made good roleplays. It's a very new site. Opened last year.. I think. These days, there are crack roleplays everywhere. And people are not welcoming. Some are, but a majority of them are younger kids so they seem to quarrel with one another. So for this sort of reason, I searched for more roleplays. And found this lovely place. ♥︎

My story isn't really that special. I used to play this weird ass text based online game... I can't for the life of me remember it's name, but it had a Role Play forum. I had no idea what it was, but when I checked it out I got interested. Stuck there for a month when I decided that I'd go see if I could find something else that was similar and I stumbled on S*T in 2004. Back then it was #1 if you google searched for 'role play forum' and that's what brought me here.

I first started in high school with my best friend Blaine. We did it out of notebooks (pokemon and naruto fandoms lolol) and at the time I didn't even know what roleplaying was. When I moved to Florida I had free reign over the internet and one of the first things I did was google "roleplaying site" and didnt expect any results (because again I didn't know if it even was an actual word). S*T was the very first in the results and I did my first roleplay with Nef and was so proud of myself until I got my graduation grade. From then, I dabbled here and there including on the site that should never be mentioned but haven't done much lately because I'm so self-conscious.

Damn, I knew someone would ding me for that.

Shelmii, it's nice to see someone who is still somewhat new to roleplaying, especially when you compare them to either Sean or myself. I feel as if it is becoming a lost art form these days, so I'm glad that you enjoy it and enjoy our company.

What is there to be self-conscious about Sunni? You know that everyone here is welcome to come as they are, and although you might have doubts about your ability or expect perfection from yourself, I'm sure your writing is just fine.

Yiffstar(it's porn don't go there) -> battle.net on Diablo II LoD chat rooms -> S*T

There were some brief places in between I dabbled with but those are the big ones. I was 12 when I joined yiffstar(I'm 24 now).

Oh. Well I didn't know!

But the only way to get better is to keep at it--surely you know that. I'd gladly roleplay with you if you need some practice--we all do anyway.

The other problem is because of my frequency and I feel guilty making people wait for me to get the motivation/energy to write.

Also, I was totally interested in your coma idea. :D

edit: it's similar to this story idea I have about dreams and these people (kids) who are able to see them in the real world while others only see them as, er for example, ghosts and such if at all.

It's true Sunni's writing literally gave me cancer

My story is a boring one. I pretty much started by doodling in notebooks, making some shitty cliche characters do stuff in a shitty cliche fantasy world. Very vanilla, I know. Then, Timey and I ended up trying MUDs (multi user dungeons -- sorta like a multiplayer rogue like game) in the school computer lab for lack of better things to do. We ended up meeting Ech, who was doing the same thing, and he introduced Timey to some "pink girly website". Timey then introduced me, and I joined.

Predictably, I kinda sucked, more due to not understanding the conventions than anything. I got quite a lot better over time, which only serves to fuel my nascent megalomania.

I was about 11 years old when I joined Pokémon Crater. It was a site where we get to play as Pokémon trainers (pretty predictable) and capture Pokémon and fight Gyms. An online Pokémon training adventure, in a sense. Back in primary school we would gather around the computers in the library during recess time, and someone would be on Pokémon Crater, and everybody else would be advising them on which starter to pick, how to fight the wild Pokémon, and so on. So when I got home I got myself an account too and played.

It was only about 2 years later that I clicked on the forums that came with it, and got hooked. I had never known what forums were before, but this seemed like a great place. I was extremely n00bish and made silly posts, and then I saw a sub-forum entitled Roleplays. I didn't know what they were (yeah, deja vu) but I messed around in it and thought it was the best concept I had ever seen. You can write a story with other people! And design your own character while doing so! Roleplays became my favourite place to hang out, even though I was accused of godmodding and character control and being obnoxious in general. >.>

One day something seemed to go wrong with Pokémon Crater and I couldn't login to my account without being logged out automatically after 1 minute. I was quite saddened at not being able to roleplay, and it was some months later, in November when I was 15 (well I'd have been 15 in December) I searched "roleplay forum" on Google and found S*T and realised it was even better than Pokémon Crater. And so I have stayed ever since. :)

I'd also like to note that S*T was also my first forum ever. Ontop of that, it's the one I'm most active in. Really says something, right???

Well, I joined the Baten Kaitos official forums way back in... well, way back when. And then a group of us branched off from those forums onto our own and that was where I first roleplayed. We did like... one or two sentences each post, most times. It was pretty lame but fun. I had two guy characters, who were predictably gay for each other.

Then all that stuff went away, and I somehow stumbled onto S*T in 2007ish? Pretty much it, for me. Nothing fancy.

I've done some RP elsewhere, mostly on continuous RP forums (where the whole site follows one story, not like S*T). I still have yet to find a decent yaoi RP forum, though, so you all are stuck with me doing that here. When I played WoW, I played on RP servers, as well. I can't not RP. It's just what I do.

Every time she tells this story I'm just like T_T imagining poor little 14 year old HH unable to log into her favourite site suddenly.

As for me it began playing custom maps in Warcraft 3 on Battle.net. I remember joining a Parasite game (aka the type of game the Swarm Mystery is based on) where the host specified everyone to RP. While others like the ship captain and AI had more things to do and RP about, I ended up with some standard role, and so I made my own fun by going to the bar and getting my guy so drunk he passed out, and just generally playing a useless and incompetent crew member.

Anyway there weren't enough RP things around there to let me keep having that sort of fun, so I eventually searched on Google. I don't know if I used a different search term or what but S*T was not the first result for me. It was like 3 pages in. I went through many sites and they all looked messy and unprofessional, and/or were just focused on some specific fandoms. I had almost given up when I tried checking out S*T, and I was pleased to see it was really tidy and organized, and allowed all sorts of RP.

I just browsed and found a Student RP that piqued my interest, and then immediately made an account and posted in it (it had no OOC thread). I never made an introduction thread. I was pretty bad at first but fortunately there were plenty of people at my level too. I've been on a few fandom-specific RP forums since, at various stages - usually during S*T's lulls, and always with HH - but never stuck around long.

To be fair a lot of those forums had some great people. There was a Pokemon one (which my friends know as Torrenta) and a really small starting out World of Darkness one. It had very few people and we left after a while and then it died. >.< and we joined HEXRPG too, since Pain and so many people came from there. Yeah we were such drifters.

Oh and not forgetting Tofu's very own Digis too. Dayday secretly loves cute furry pets.
